Clean Up Day

The Clean Up Day and the Business Clean-Out Service are available to help you properly dispose of unwanted items.

A Clean Up Day is a customer scheduled appointment for curbside collection of excess materials. It is available for both Palo Alto residents and businesses once per calendar year.

The Business Clean-Out Service is available for businesses that are temporarily generating more recyclables than their regular recycling service can accommodate.

Resident with Individual Garbage Service

The Clean Up Day program provides you with an opportunity to have bulky items and excess garbage, yard trimmings and recyclables picked up curbside once per calendar year. Please follow the guidelines below to schedule your Clean Up Day.

Please donate all reusable items prior to scheduling your Clean Up Day. Recycle Where lists resources for reusing and recycling many common items such as electronic equipment, flower pots, building materials and more!


Clean Up Day Guidelines

 
  • Schedule your Clean Up Day by calling GreenWaste of Palo Alto at (650) 493-4894 at least one week in advance.
  • You are allowed one Clean Up Day per calendar year.
  • Your Clean Up Day will be scheduled on one of your normal collection days.
  • You are allowed the following:
      • Up to four (4) bulky items (e.g., furniture, mattresses, appliances) with a weight limit of 200 pounds each.
      • Unlimited containerized recyclables, yard trimmings and garbage (container will not be returned and all yard trimmings/compostables must be in paper bags or cardboard boxes). Total weight of each container must be less than 60 pounds.
      • Individual items no larger than 4' x 4' x 3' and weighing less than 60 pounds that are not feasible to place in containers (e.g., sinks, toilets, wood pallets, suitcases, printers, small tool chests, bicycles, tires - up to 4 tires accepted).  
  • For safety purposes, tape closed or securely tie doors of all appliances.
  • Place bulky items at the curb, but separately from the rest of your Clean Up Day material. A different collection vehicle will pick up bulky items. Please do not place bulky items in the driveway or sidewalk. 
  • Additional bulky items will be collected at City-established rates.
  • Place all materials at the curb by 6 AM on your normal collection day. Please do not place items in the driveway or sidewalk. 
  • Hazardous waste (e.g., paint, chemicals, treated wood), automobile parts and  construction materials such as rocks, dirt and concrete will not be collected.

Business or Residential Multi-Unit Complex Manager

Business Clean-Out Service

The Business Clean-Out Service provides you with extra recycling capacity for a temporary business clean-out or file purge that creates more recyclables than your regular recycling service can accommodate. Please follow the guidelines below to schedule your Clean-Out Service.


How It Works

  • Schedule your Clean-Out Service by calling GreenWaste of Palo Alto at (650) 493-4894.
  • The Clean-Out Service consists of up to two 2-cubic yard locking bins will be delivered. You will be provided with a key.
  • You are allowed to have these bins for up to five (5) days per calendar year, at no additional cost. Multi-tenant commercial buildings require account holder authorization.
  • Only recyclables accepted in Palo Alto's recycling program can be placed in the bins. Your business is responsible for proper bin usage.
  • GreenWaste will empty full bins, with 24-hour notice, Monday through Saturday.
