This City of Palo Alto Utilities Department (CPAU) project will replace High Pressure Sodium “Cobrahead” streetlight fixtures (lamps) with energy efficient LED fixtures.
Background
The City of Palo Alto has approximately 6600 streetlights illuminating streets and pathways. Of these approximately 5560 are Cobrahead. The remaining are made up of various types of decorative lights at different locations around the city. In 2012, the City conducted a pilot project to replace lights in a selected area. This project will continue the replacement of the streetlight fixtures.
Scope
The project involves the removal of High Pressure Sodium (HPS) cobrahead streetlight fixtures and installation of energy efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures in their place. The new LED street lighting fixtures consume far less energy than the HPS lighting fixtures the replaced and improve lighting levels. Estimated energy savings associated with this replacement results in a seven year payback for the work.
The work will be in all areas within the Palo Alto city limits.

A total of 5560 cobrahead light fixtures have been replaced in the first three Phases of the project.
Phase 4 Fiscal Year 2016 – Staff is investigating options for retrofitting the various decorative type fixtures around the city. If staff identifies viable alternatives, they will be presented to the Public, Architectural Review Board and Council before any changes are made.
