Women's Soccer Downs Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz.- In a high-scoring match at Murphey Stadium, the University of Arizona
women's soccer was beaten 5-2, by Stanford. The Wildcats end their season
with 8-11-1 overall and 2-7 Pac-10 records. Stanford closes `97 with an 11-7-1 overall record and 6-2-1 Pac-10
mark.
Five of the game's seven gaols were scored in the first 24 minutes of play, with Stanford's Emily Burt
denting the net at the 10:21 mark to open the scoring. Burt went on to notch another goal 12 minutes later.
Stanford junior midfielder Tracye Lawyer collected one goal and two assists in the game, and Rita Hermiz was
credited with a pair of assists. The Cardinal's other two goals were scored by Elie Foster and Christy Stoffel.
Wildcat sophomore midfielder KRISTA BOGDAN (Salpointe Catholic HS) had the UA's first goal off an
assist by junior forward NIKKI JONES at 16:08. Eight minutes later, Jones chipped Cardinal goalkeeper Carly
Smolak to give the Cats their second, and final, goal of the match.
UA freshman goalkeeper INGER AIRHEART faced 25 shots and made 10 saves. Smolak was credited
with four saves for the Cardinal.
Arizona ends the season on a four-game losing skid and had losses in five of its last six matches.
Stanford ended its year on an eight-game unbeaten streak.
