Description
3Tones is a tile-matching puzzle game that generates content using MP3 music files. The game can import custom MP3 music to the game, that can be used on most modes with the exception of the Career Mode. The player starts the game by choosing one of the modes and selecting one of the thirty included tracks, or files from a custom playlist. Most of the screen state is occupied by a grid filled with multi-colored tiles adorned with music notation symbols and notes. A rhythm tray at the bottom keeps getting new groups of tiles, with shapes that follow the sound waves of the background music. If the tray gets full, the game is over. The objective is to click and drag on grid tiles that are adjacent, of the same type and matching one of the tray groups, to eliminate both the grid and tray blocks. A combo meter between the grid and the tray fills with each match, activating the combo and fire modes once it is full. In the combo mode, the goal is to complete a sequence of matches to enter fire mode, where groups of tiles can be destroyed by simply clicking on them.
Power-ups appear randomly on the grid, either inside a tile with an X or as icons that can be activated directly. They help the player by shuffling the tiles, pausing the tray for a few seconds, removing tiles or painting them of the same color.
The game has four modes. The first couple are readily available while the remaining two can be unlocked later through playing. In the main Career Mode, the objective is to play through the songs to earn badges, received after achieving highscores and completing certain challenges. In the Arcade Mode, the goal is to last as long as possible, with the game stopping only when the tray is full. In the Time Attack Mode, the game has a time limit to clear the tray and grid. In the Puzzle Mode, the player has to remove the tiles from a full tray by making careful matches.
