Every patient and family deserves respect. I treat my patients with kindness and understanding, and also give them straight talk about what is happening to them.

This is true no matter where I see my patients. I have been overseas on medical volunteer missions, sometimes in groups, sometimes alone, and have operated in more than 500 cases in hospitals in resource-poor areas of China, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, Ecuador, and Mozambique. I feel extremely privileged to be able to be of service in this way.

Correcting or preventing deformity and pain is the heart of my work, and seeing young people adapt or recover from injury, cancer, and impairments makes me proud of the orthopedic profession. I especially enjoy seeing former patients some years after they have completed their treatment with me. Equally important to me is the satisfaction I get seeing the many trainees who have passed through our residency program and have gone on to become excellent orthopedic surgeons.
