I come from a rural background as a physician treating farmers; I speak very plainly and I think that makes people feel more comfortable to talk openly with me. Often times people are afraid to speak about their concerns. I try to start the conversation by listening to patients and families, paying attention to their concerns.
Some patients I care for over the course of their life, and I develop close relationships with the entire family. Occasionally I'll get invited to a Quinceañera, which is really meaningful. These are amazing families that do whatever it takes to give their children the best chance at a great life. Instead of telling families what to do, I try to be their coach. Parents know their child better than anyone else. I want them to feel empowered and comfortable to make their own decisions.
