Customer Service Representative (Donor Relations)

The Position

The Customer Service Representative (Donor Relations) is the person on the busy frontline of the Membership office, which works within the Development department to answer members’ questions and keep them informed about UCS activities. Last year, more than 98,000 members contributed over $8 million to support the work of UCS.

The Customer Service Representative (Donor Relations) is the first point of contact for members and supporters. Answers the toll-free Member Line, screens the general UCS email inbox, and responds to inquiries. Prepares special donor acknowledgments and correspondence, helps administer the monthly giving program, and assists in preparing state and federal workplace giving applications. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about UCS programs and all facets of UCS fundraising and Development work. 

Responsibilities

  • Acts as primary staff contact with donors for a national nonprofit.
  • Daily tasks include answering membership telephone line and reviewing and responding to the public email inbox.
  • Responsible for providing excellent donor relations by answering a variety of inquiries and resolving membership questions.
  • Works with program staff to handle inquiries as needed and to craft responses to frequently asked questions.
  • Assists with database management, including updating and maintaining accurate donor records, doing occasional data entry, and running weekly/monthly department reports.
  • Handles logistics for the monthly giving program, including providing outstanding customer service to monthly donors who call or email, updating recurring gift changes and cancellations, and working with vendor to resolve donor issues and ensure accuracy of donor records.
  • Maintains schedule of state and federal workplace giving campaigns and submits applications for eligible campaigns throughout the year. 
  • Writes and sends assorted correspondence to members, including special required acknowledgements.
  • Handles donor relation functions connected with honor/memorial gifts, monthly giving, and workplace gifts.
  • Sorts and handles hard copy mail that is returned to us daily from lockbox vendor.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Excellent customer service skills are required.
  • A willingness to interact with members and the public, and a friendly, articulate, and efficient phone manner are required.
  • Database proficient. Knowledge of Raisers Edge a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage and meet multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Position requires strong word processing, database and customer relations skills.
  • Demonstrate a strong attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Writing and proofreading skills are desirable.
  • An interest in nonprofits and the issues UCS works on is preferred.
  • Familiarity with and interest in development and fundraising techniques is strongly preferred.

Web Content Assistant

One Year Temporary Position

The Union of Concerned Scientists is seeking a temporary Web Content Assistant to work in the Communications department. The Web Content Assistant will work with writers, editors, web content managers, and UCS program staff on a range of written and multimedia projects, including and especially keeping our website, ucsusa.org, up to date. This is an entry-level, one-year position.

  • Update general sections of the UCS websites (jobs page, expert bios, about section) as requested by website manager.
  • Create slides for homepage spotlight as requested by website manager.
  • Create and maintain a content organizing system for different sections of the website.
  • Support content managers on section updates as assigned.
  • Research appropriate photos for the website, its blog, and our Spanish-language website. Upload photos into digital asset management system, working closely with our production coordinator to ensure quality control.
  • May also assist with blog and podcast-related tasks, supporting the web content team as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills; organizational skills; and outstanding attention to detail. Knowledge of content management systems like WordPress and/or Drupal is preferred. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and Outlook will be helpful. Also needed are excellent interpersonal skills, as well as an ability to work both independently and in teams. Interest in science, environment strongly preferred. Fluent in Spanish is a plus. A bachelor’s degree in a field that requires writing is preferred.

Senior Outreach Coordinator (Bilingual)

The Position

UCS’s Climate Impacts Campaign seeks to move the public and federal lawmakers towards strong, swift action on climate change, through focusing on those climate change impacts we are already experiencing, such as extreme heat and precipitation, wildfires, and sea level rise. As Senior Outreach Coordinator, you will work with a creative, dedicated, and multi-disciplinary team of scientists, analysts, communications experts, and campaign organizers to mobilize diverse constituencies for federal action to reduce carbon emissions and to prepare for  the impacts of climate change .

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead efforts to mobilize scientists, experts, elected officials, business, faith, and military leaders and others.
  • Develop, and implement outreach plans associated with major new UCS products.
  • Develop and manage projects to advance national and state-based climate initiatives, achieve political strategy goals, and contribute to overall campaign outcomes.
  • As part of a cross-program team, help develop and implement our Spanish-language communications and outreach strategy.
  • Identify and raise the profile of communities taking action to prepare for climate changewith special attention to the equity dimensions of climate change adaptation in particular for working class communities and communities of color, including Latino/Hispanic, African American, and Tribal communities.
  • Maintain competency in issue areas and outreach expertise.
  • Represent UCS at public events, conferences, and to members.

Qualifications and experience

  • Five to seven years of comparable and relevant experience in both outreach and advocacy is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in effective climate and energy campaigning. Familiarity with climate mitigation and preparedness policies is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, balance a multitude of tasks, be a self-starter, and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills are required, as well as proven ability to write for a variety of audiences.
  • Must have experience in coalition-building and management, as well as experience with grassroots organizing and member recruitment (including online activism and marketing), social media, and media relations.
  • Experience with campaign planning and strategy development is required, as is demonstrated success working with coalitions and/or professional associations.
  • Solid understanding of database maintenance, on-line organizing tools, online research, and Microsoft Office a must.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects for extended periods of time, and to be flexible under fast-changing campaign conditions.
  • Background in climate, energy, or environmental sciences is required.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English required.

Outreach Assistant

The UCS Science Network is home to thousands of scientists, engineers, economists, public health specialists, and other experts throughout the country who share the desire to put their knowledge to work in protecting our health, safety, and environment. The Science Network enables technical experts to advance the role of science in tackling today’s most complex problems.

The Outreach Assistant is the glue holds the Science Network's team together and helps to ensure the Science Network builds strong relationships with its members, offers opportunities for members to grow their skills and experience as effective advocates, and runs smoothly.

Responsibilities

Cultivate and engage Science Networks members to become impactful advocates

  • Recruiting, welcoming, and integrating new members, and helping to cultivate existing members
  • Assisting the team in showcasing examples of successful scientist engagement
  • Co-designing and supporting engagement plans
  • Conducting and regularly assessing training program and post-event engagement.

Build relationships on behalf of the Science Network

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will have strong outreach, administrative, and organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field is preferred. Two years of comparable experience in outreach, organizing, campaign, and advocacy position is required.

Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with a diverse array of individuals, including professionals who may be experts and/or prominent in their fields is necessary, as are strong computer skills. Must have demonstrated competency in outreach/organizing, legislative and media strategies, online organizing platforms, datatbases, Mircosoft Office, and program coordination.

Ability to work independently, and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team is necessary. Experience managing budgets and contracts is preferred.

May spend extended periods at computer terminal.  The position requires periodic domestic, overnight travel (5-6 times per year).

CRM Trainer

The CRM Trainer is part of a team whose mission is to ensure the accuracy and integrity of UCS data. The CRM Trainer is responsible for managing the documentation and training on UCS’ online and offline databases and coordinating with end-users to document procedures and train in records maintenance and other business practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide initial training on both UCS’s databases and other fundraising software.
  • Create job aids that are role specific.
  • Keeps informed of software updates, upgrades, new features, and additional services in all our database and fundraising software.
  • Assist staff in optimizing new features and ensure they understand what is required of them in both systems to maintain database integrity.
  • Works with Data Operations Team to conduct quality assurance check.
  • As with all our data management positions, frequent data entry will be required.

 Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong attention to detail, a high level of accuracy, flexibility, and the ability to multi-task, work efficiently, and meet tight deadlines required
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to think analytically, problem-solve effectively and follow complicated procedures is very important.

The Position

The Food and Environment Program (F&E) develops original scientific analysis in support of a healthy, sustainable, and just food system. You will help represent UCS on food and farm policy in front of Congress, the executive branch, nonprofits, business groups, and the DC policy community. You’ll work closely with other UCS staff to develop strategies to integrate legislative work with research and outreach to achieve policy goals.

You’ll bring familiarity with federal food and agriculture policy issues and a working knowledge of the legislative process and an understanding of effective advocacy strategies. Outstanding oral and written communication skills will help you succeed in a fast-paced environment. An ability and willingness to collaborate effectively with diverse audiences is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Food & Environment program’s Federal policy agenda - including Farm Bill, agricultural research, conservations programs, and nutrition programs.
  • Develop and implement campaign strategies and coalition policy goals, focusing on advocacy and outreach components.
  • Provide strategic and innovative input on advancing F&E’s policy priorities and defend against policies and actions undermining science in federal policymaking.
  • Represent UCS as needed. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with congressional staff, administration officials, and coalition and environmental justice partners. Participate in coalition activities and support community-based allies.
  • Track legislation and regulations in Congress and federal agencies. Identify opportunities for action.
  • Draft, edit, and fact-check advocacy materials such as letters, fact sheets, op-eds, presentations, and briefing papers.
  • Conduct power-mapping analysis informing grassroots outreach strategies.
  • Participate in research projects. Develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge relevant to Food & Environment issues.
  • Participate in regular cross-programmatic lobby caucus meetings and activities.

Qualifications and experience

You must have familiarity with federal food and agriculture policy issues and interest in or experience working on public interest advocacy campaigns. A basic knowledge of science or technical policy issues is also helpful.  Must understand the legislative process, including advocacy/lobbying techniques and strategies, legislative strategy, and the policymaking process; a proven ability to learn quickly; strong time management skills; outstanding oral and written communication skills; and an ability to collaborate effectively with diverse audiences. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), CQ/Knowlegis, and Lexis/Nexis is a plus. Ability to work in fast-paced environment; self-starter who also works well in teams; B.S. or B.A. degree, preferably in political science or public policy is desired.

The position requires 3 to 5 years of relevant experience including two solid years of comparable experience in legislative, campaign, and lobbying at the national or grassroots level. Proven advocacy and communication skills and experience working to engage stakeholders and influence decision-making is necessary. Capitol Hill experience is a plus. You should also demonstrate strong research skills, a positive, team-oriented work ethic, and the ability to work in a deadline-driven environment.

Little or no exertion; may require extended periods at a computer. Some late hours and/or weekends may be required in connection with events or critical deadlines.

Limited required travel (up to 6 overnights per year).

Responsibilities

  • Help recruit new expert supporters for UCS, communicating regularly with supporters and allies, and engaging supporters in policy advocacy.

The Program Assistant is responsible for supporting several of the Climate and Energy Program’s major campaign initiatives. You will provide support for meetings and production assistance for reports and other materials. In support of campaign events, you will participate in logistics and event planning, meeting and presentation material organizing, and payment and tracking of contractor invoices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide scheduling support and note taking for regular meetings.
  • Provide production assistance for reports and other materials including compiling, organizing, fact-checking and summarizing material such as data, photos, and graphics.
  • In support of convenings and events, coordinate participant lists and invitations, manage communication between participants before and after meetings, support the creation and refinement of meeting agendas, arrange travel, manage logistical details for booking event space, hotels and catering, compile meeting and presentation materials and notes.
  • Provide program-wide administrative assistance. This might include set up and management of external consultant contracts, invoice payment and tracking, scheduling and meeting room set-up.
  • Manage sensitive information with discretion.

Qualifications and experience

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is preferred. To succeed, you should have considerable self-motivation, attention to details, familiarity with office and administrative support procedures, competence in word processing and spreadsheet software, and excellent Outlook and web research skills.

Interest in and desire to learn more about climate and energy issues preferred.

Strong organizational abilities and good written and oral communication skills are needed. Excellent personal relation skills are essential. Must be able to work both independently and in teams.

You have least two years of relevant experience as an administrative or research assistant. Experience with maintaining databases and event planning is preferred.

The Outreach Internship is a one-year, full-time position supporting our corporate and national campaigns to reduce major fossil fuel companies’ influence in blocking climate action. You’ll work with outreach, legislative, analytical and other staff in the cross programmatic climate accountability team.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with UCS supporters and scientists to recruit them for events and actions;
  • Attract new audiences to our climate accountability campaign, including frontline communities and climate justice partners;
  • Work with outreach staff to write, fact-check, and develop advocacy emails;
  • Assist with planning for conferences and events, including logistical and outreach support

  • Monitor daily media and blogs for climate accountability issues and rapid response opportunities;

Field Coordinator

The Position

Under the direction of the Manager, Strategic Campaigns for the Global Security Program (GSP), the Field Coordinator will help conceive and manage a multi-state regional outreach, communications and organizing effort with the goal of engaging key members of Congress, key constituency groups, UCS supporters, opinion leaders and local, state and regional media on nuclear weapons and missile defense issues.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a theory of change/influence strategy for targeted members of Congress in IL, MI, OH, MN, IN and WI involving a range of online and offline activities
  • Initiate and build strong, mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders/influencers, including prospective coalition partners, local and state elected officials, and media
  • Identify and cultivate UCS activists, Science Network members and donors to engage with UCS
  • Organize and manage off-line and on-line events, such as campus/community talks by UCS experts; activist and UCS supporter trainings, webinars and workshops, and briefings
  • Represent GSP at state and regional meetings and events
  • Collaborate with staff to develop state and regional media strategies in support of GSP goals
  • Help promote major UCS analytic and communications products
  • Develop and maintain basic issue knowledge (you do not have to be a nuclear weapons expert!) and stay up-to-date on developments in Congress and on nuclear weapons matters
  • Regularly monitor the views, statements, votes and issue positions of targeted members of Congress
  • Track, evaluate, and report back on campaign activities to evaluate effectiveness

Qualifications and Experience

  • Position requires and 3 to 5 years of relevant and comparable experience in campaign organizing and policy advocacy
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Demonstrated success with strategic campaign planning, grassroots organizing, and online and offline mobilization tools
  • Global security/nuclear weapons issue experience is helpful but not required
  • Must have experience in building and maintaining relationships with key constituencies, with an emphasis on non-traditional constituencies such as racial/social justice and faith organizations

As Western States Energy Analyst, you will develop and analyze scenarios for California’s electricity grid to identify potential impacts of energy investments and to provide data and analysis for future energy decisions. This work includes:

  • writing and editing technical reports, fact sheets, and other materials communicating research results;
  • preparing regulatory and legislative comments and testimony;
  • participating in the development, outreach and advocacy of UCS clean energy and climate change policy positions;
  • meeting with policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders;
  • representing UCS and its philosophy and positions at various public forums.

Responsibilities

Design and develop quantitative analyses that address current, critical regulatory and policy issues related to increasing the penetration of renewable energy onto western electricity grids. Working with colleagues and/consultants, gather data, identify appropriate modeling tools and other research methods, design scenarios, analyze outputs, and assist UCS staff in writing reports, papers, and fact sheets highlighting the results of various analyses. Solicit review and feedback from editors, internal and external colleagues, and supervisor; present information and address questions and criticism. Edit manuscripts and reports as needed. Maintain accuracy, credibility, readability and timeliness of all written material. Tailor style and content of materials for different audiences, as appropriate. Disseminate materials to policymakers, the media, and the public.

Maintain current knowledge of analytical tools and energy technologies, policies and markets, and of evolving environmental and climate change policies. Monitor and assess current and ongoing research and trends in advanced clean energy technology and market issues, climate change policies, and related fields. Use this expertise in research and advocacy activities.

Maintain regular contact with modelers and energy analysts from other organizations and government agencies to keep up to date on the latest analyses, research and model developments

When appropriate, provide technical and strategic assistance to policymakers, opinion leaders and coalition partners. Respond to inquiries and comments from stakeholders, media, members, sponsors, and general public about energy related issues; promote UCS position and objectives.

Provide technical advice and guidance and work with development, organizing, or communications staff to coordinate energy related messages.

Represent UCS at workshops, hearings, conferences, and other various public forums.

Qualifications and experience

This position requires at least 3-5 years of experience researching and analyzing energy issues related to markets, regulation, reliability and policy implementation.  Familiarity with and experience using electricity models such as PLEXOS or other production-cost models, or electricity capacity expansion and optimization models is highly desirable.

Knowledge of electricity market design and operations is also highly desired. A Master’s degree or higher that has a quantitative component is required. A demonstrated ability to translate quantitative analysis to a policy audience and manage and deliver work within a budget and timeline is required. Computer programming experience, with knowledge of how to run production-cost or investment optimization models can be extremely helpful.

The Western States Outreach Assistant is a full-time six-month internship, assisting with outreach campaigns that harness the power of the “clean energy transition” taking place across the country and contribute to a resilient water system in the face of climate change. You will contribute creative ideas, research, logistical and administrative support to campaigns in California, Oregon, and Washington. You’ll work with our network of scientists to support local, state and regional policy solutions that fight global warming, promote clean energy for all, and prepare for a climate changed future.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and send action alerts and event invitations, and recruit UCS supporters and scientists for events and actions;
  • Support collaboration with partner organizations through meetings, strategy sessions, materials production, and joint event planning;
  • Set up and recruit for online and in-person events and trainings;
  • Assist with planning for conferences, including logistical and outreach support;
  • Research and compile information for factsheets, blogs, and social media use; including Spanish language materials and/or communication;
  • Assist UCS staff—particularly Western States Director—with administrative needs; and
  • Participate in planning and strategy meetings.

Qualifications and experience

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with professionals who may be expert and/or prominent in their fields.
  • Experience with public interest campaigns and organizing are a plus.
  • Interest in and basic knowledge of climate change and clean energy in the US preferred.

Senior Climate Scientist

As Western States Senior Climate Scientist you will design and carry out research on how California and other western states can cope with the current and projected impacts of climate change, including  impacts on water systems and how water management strategies can enhance future water supply sustainability.  Working with a dynamic, high performing West Coast team you will research and raise awareness of climate change consequences in California, including human and economic costs that can be avoided by sound policies. As Senior Climate Scientist, you will help lead our efforts to provide robust, timely, accessible and policy-relevant information on climate science. Working with UCS’s climate and energy team, you’ll provide research and expert technical and analytical advice to campaigns, and carry out related research, outreach, and media activities, primarily focused on climate work in California, Oregon, and Washington.

 Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop relevant analytic and research projects that will advance western climate and water campaign goals. Scope and assess new ideas, develop project plans, and implement work on promising ideas.
  • Plan, design, and carry out primary analysis of climate change on key sectors and populations in California and western states, taking into account technical feasibility, opportunities for effective collaboration with key regionally-based experts and influential stakeholders and policy relevance within the context of UCS’s climate campaigns.
  • Help develop, review and ensure high quality UCS materials on climate science and adaptation, including reports, science briefs, web pages, infographics, blog posts, press releases, expert testimony, draft legislation, webinars, and public presentations.
  • Serve as a climate science resource for media, outreach and policy goals, including support for fundraising efforts such as answering high priority member and donor questions, and assisting with proposal writing. 
  • Maintain close working relationships with relevant experts and influential stakeholders at other institutions. Exchange information, share resources, and strengthen UCSs leadership role on climate science and impacts in California and other western states.
  • Serve as project leader who guides the research design, external expert collaborator engagement, and works with key staff on the media and outreach aspects of major reports.
  • Serve as an advisor or resource on research, web or outreach projects led by other project leaders.
  • Serve as lead UCS spokesperson on climate science and impacts in California to the media and public, scientific conferences and policy-relevant research collaborations.
  • Supervise consultants or staff, as appropriate

Qualifications and experience

Position requires an in-depth knowledge of climate science and impacts and demonstrable ability to understand the public policy aspects of climate change and the role of technical analyses and advocacy in informing public opinion and policy debates. Knowledge of California climate impacts and policy are highly desirable. Position also requires strong public speaking skills, a demonstrable ability to write for non-technical audiences, and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. PhD in a relevant field required.

Work requires a strong background in climate change science and impacts and five to seven years of comparable and relevant experience, including collaborative work in academic research teams or government research programs or the application of climate science to public policy and experience in communicating science to a wide variety of audiences, especially the media. Experience with the application of climate science to public policy a plus. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential. Experience managing scientific and technical groups while utilizing project management techniques and supervising research staff is desired.
