Strategy Head - Integrated Urban Transport, WRI India Sustainable Cities

Bio

Amit is the Strategy Head – Integrated Urban Transport at EMBARQ India. He is based in Delhi and provides vision and leadership to all transport initiatives across EMBARQ India, managing relationships with partners and stakeholders. Amit leads the work around BRT projects and city bus services in Surat, Indore, Jaipur and Bangalore; urban transport projects in Naya Raipur; restructuring the auto-rickshaw sector in Rajkot; and developing a public bicycling scheme in Jaipur.

Amit manages UNDP’s capacity building programme, the World Bank’s peer-to-peer learning programme and the project on low carbon public transport mobility solutions for rapidly growing Indian cities, supported by the British High Commission. He has contributed to ‘Bus Karo’, a guidebook on bus operations and service planning for Indian cities published by EMBARQ India. He has been a resource-person at several national and international workshops and conferences on Urban Transport, and is a core group member of 3 sub-committees on the Public Bicycling Scheme set up by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.

Amit has over 12 years experience in the field of transport and urban development. Prior to EMBARQ India, Amit worked with the Urban Mass Transit Company, IL&FS Infrastructure, and was the project manager for the Surat and Rajkot BRT projects. He also managed the city bus services in over 6 cities, and was involved in several technical studies like Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Gurgoan and the Urban Transport Vision Document for Kanpur. Amit worked with CRAPHTS and Span Consultants in New Delhi where he was involved with CTS studies for Rajahmundary and Guntur, the Comprehensive Development Plan for Meerut, Road Safety Policy and Action Plan for the state of Tamil Nadu, and strengthening various sections of the National Highways and incorporating a national road safety policy.

Amit is visiting faculty at the Department of Transport Planning, and the Department of Urban Planning at the School or Planning and Architecture, New Delhi.

Amit has been formally trained as an architect and transport planner. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and a Master’s degree in Transport Planning from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. Amit also has a Master’s degree in Economics from CSJM University, Kanpur, and a diploma in Transport Economics and Management from IRT, New Delhi.
