Jonathan Mason

Research Analyst, Forest Legality Initiative

Bio

Jonathan is a Research Analyst with the Forest Legality Initiative (FLI), which promotes improved forest and supply chain management practices as they relate to demand-side trade regulations. Jonathan leads the team in planning for results, monitoring, evaluation, and donor reporting, in addition to supporting research and project development and management for the team’s Madagascar activities. Before assuming his current role, Jonathan was FLI’s Project Coordinator, managing the team’s finances, donor reporting, and event coordination. He also interned with Global Forest Watch prior to FLI.

Before joining WRI, Jonathan served for three years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Madagascar. There, he trained smallholding cocoa farmers in improved crop tree management techniques and oversaw Fair Trade compliance for a cocoa company's field operations and its supply partners.

Jonathan holds a BA in History and an MPA in Environmental Science and Policy, both from Columbia University.

He enjoys bicycling, getting acquainted with the city's different neighborhoods and green spaces, lounging in his hammock, cooking, and tennis.

Sete anos atrás, a Polícia Ambiental do Estado de São Paulo iniciou um plano para combater o comércio ilegal de madeira por meio de melhorias na fiscalização. Em 2011, durante uma de suas mais ambiciosas operações de fiscalização, agentes da Polícia Ambiental inspecionaram quase 350 caminhões e mais de 60 serrarias em apenas dois dias. Descobrindo diversas infrações, os agentes emitiram 50 autuações e aplicaram um total de R$2,2 milhões (US$ 1,4 milhões) em multas.
