Mark Engel’s paintings use abstract and figurative elements such as humans, birds, lines, grids, and geometric shapes to reflect structures in a congested and fluctuating environment. He sets up a tension between movement and stability to reflect a state of transformation. The forms, perceptions, and facts that establish necessary boundaries for an individual life or culture are illusive. They never stay fixed, but are always temporary structures of consolidated energy that absorb and express limited knowing and experience. He believes that the inherent nature of life is a continual movement which seeks to establish, expand, and transform structures in an ever advancing stream for broader, more expanding forms of knowing.

Michael Golden has been making images for most of his life. At an early age, he realized how enjoyable it is to lose oneself in the world of the imagination. During a lengthy career in advertising and graphic design, he also devoted time to making personal, non-commercial artwork. His current work features individual photographs, as well as montages of original images, juxtaposed and manipulated digitally. With these pieces, he is trying to re-create the powerful impressions made by a particular place and time. He recently began printing a number of these new works on silk, a beautiful material that mimics the fabric of memory, so insubstantial and yet so strong.

This exhibition of recent paintings includes expressionistic cityscape scenes that Anthony Ventura developed during the last ten years. His work is a contemplative exploration of the relationship we have with our environment. The rich palette that highlights this work observes the timeless qualities of light that are congruent with the time between dusk and twilight. The work is mindful of the relationship of light and color and its interaction with our environment. It employs an intuitive process by which he renders scenes that are a collage of observations inspired by travels to New York City and images of the West Coast, as well as travels abroad. These paintings are emotionally charged environments, comprised of the layers of association that become attached to the places that are meaningful to us.
