**Limited program for full-time Stanford assistant and associate professors with Pi eligibility (those with UTL, MCL, and NTLR faculty appointments.. Only ONE applicant is permitted, therefore, a university-wide internal selection process is required. Applicants must be working in the area of studies of brain function. This includes molecular and clinical neuroscience as well as studies of neural, sensory, motor, cognitive, behavioral and emotional functioning in health and disease. The grant proposal must detail a new research project that is not funded by other sources.

Amount of funding: $40,000 direct costs per year for a two year period
$80,000 total direct costs. No indirect costs are provided.

Notification of selection by SNI to PI: Dec. 11, 2017
Institutional representative (RPM/RMG or OSR) deadline (LOI requires their signature): Dec. 18, 2017
*RMG will assist the applicant selected in obtaining a nomination letter to be signed by Dr. Mark Cullen
The RPM or OSR contract officer for the applicant selected will submit the online LOI by Dec. 21, 2017 (prior to the start of our holiday closure period since the sponsor’s LOI deadline is Jan. 8th.

Purpose:
The objective of the BRF Seed Grant Program is to support new and innovative projects, especially those of junior faculty, who are working in new research directions. The BRF Seed Grant awards are not intended to supplement existing grants. The purpose of our Program is to provide start-up monies for new research projects in the field of Neuroscience that will likely lead to extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other outside funding sources.
The Brain Research Foundation has invited Stanford and other institutions to nominate ONE faculty member to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) for the Fay/Frank Seed Grant Program.
- To be eligible, PI must be a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor with PI eligibility (those with UTL, MCL, NTLR faculty appointments) at an invited institution (which includes Stanford University).
- Applicants must be working in the area of studies of brain function. This includes molecular and clinical neuroscience as well as studies of neural, sensory, motor, cognitive, behavioral and emotional functioning in health and disease. The grant proposal must detail a new research project that is not funded by other sources
- Individuals may collaborate with another PI, even at another instituion, however only one name can be listed on the application.
- Funding is to be directed at pilot research projects that are both innovative and will likely lead to successful grant applications to NIH and other public and private funding entities.
- Assistant Professor – Junior faculty with a new research project that will generate pilot data that will lead to RO1 funding or a comparable outside grant will be first priority.
- Must provide abstract and specific aims for current grants and indicate if there is any overlap.

- Associate Professor – Faculty who are pursuing new research directions.
- Must explain how the project is a new research direction.

- A new technique is not considered a new direction unless it pertains to a different area of study.
- Seed Grants are NOT to be used for bridge funding between grants.

Selection process:
A committee from the Standford Neurosciences Institute will conduct the internal review. That committee will select the applicant to represent the university.
