Resident & Fellow Benefits
Housing Allowances
- All pathology residents and clinical fellows will annually receive a taxable housing allowance in the amount of $10,000 from Department of Pathology funds. Residents will receive the first part of the pathology housing allowance in their August paychecks and the second part of the pathology housing allowance in their February paychecks. The amount of $10,000 per year is guaranteed for the first four years of their training at Stanford.
- New/first-time residents will receive a one-time $1,000 payment in July to cover gas, mileage & cell phone charges. A one-time taxable housing allowance of $3,000 is disbursed in August by the Stanford Hospital and Clinics' Office of Graduate Medical Education.
Benefits
Hospital and major medical insurance for each house officer and his or her dependents are provided. Dental insurance for the house officer and his or her children is provided, with the spouse's dental insurance available at the house officer's expense. Disability insurance, malpractice insurance, and sick leave benefits are also provided to house staff at Stanford. Lab coats and their laundry, pagers, and some University privileges are available.
Additional benefits include on-call meal cards for residents who must remain in-house overnight at Stanford. A $2,000 educational allowance is provided by the Hospital. Also, Stanford pays fees for initial state licensure (for which trainees apply at the end of internship) and for Step III.
More specific information regarding these topics, as well as local housing information is available from Ms. Ann Dohn of the Stanford Hospital and Clinics' Graduate Medical Education Office at (650) 723-5948.
Time Off
- Personal time off: House staff are permitted to take up to three weeks of personal time off with pay during each one-year period. Personal time off must be scheduled in advance with the approval of the Director of the Residency Training Program in each department or division. Stanford University Medical Center believes that personal time away from the residency program is important to the welfare of House Staff, so unused personal time off does not accumulate from year to year and there is no provision for pay in lieu of time off.
- Sick Leave: House officers will not accumulate sick leave credit, and no additional compensation will be paid for unused sick leave. They will be granted 20 days of sick leave (4 weeks) per annum, if needed. Salary will continue, offset by state disability or worker's compensation benefits.
Educational, Licensing & USMLE Reimbursements
- The Stanford Office of Graduate Medical Education offers a $2000 educational reimbursement to full-time residents. These funds may be used for books, journal subscriptions, professional meeting registration, computer software or other educationally related materials.
- The Stanford Office of Graduate Medical Education will reimburse residents in the amount of $900 toward the cost of an initial California medical license if obtained after receipt of a House Staff contract at Stanford Hospital and prior to September 1st of the resident's PGY II year (or 1st PGY year of training at Stanford University Medical Center).
- Individuals at Stanford Hospital and Clinics in the PGY 1 category will be reimbursed $635 toward the cost of one sitting of the USMLE Part III examination
