Adjusting Memory Allocation to CrashPlan PROe

Adjusting the memory allocation

CrashPlan PROe may run out of memory and crash when de-duplicating and backing up large file systems greater than 1TB or one million files. You can experiment raising maximum amount of of RAM that CrashPlan can use to prevent incomplete backups.

Step 1: Launch the CrashPlan PROe application.

Windows 7

At the start menu, go to the Search box and begin typing “crash…"  The system will bring up the shortcut to the CrashPlan PROe application.  Click it.

Windows 8

Press the Windows Key and start typing “crash…” This brings up the shortcut to the CrashPlan Application. Click it.

Step 2: Launch the command line interpreter.

Double click the building icon on the top right-hand side (authentication is not necessary.)

click CrashPlan icon to launch command line interpreter

A command line interpreter window appears. In this example, we're allowing CrashPlan to use a maximum of 1.5 GB (1536 MB) of RAM. Type the following command and press ENTER.

command line interpreter

CrashPlan won't use all this memory all the time. This is the ceiling of how much it can use when performing certain tasks. For most users, the default 1024 MB ceiling strikes the right balance. For exceptionally large amounts of data, experiment with different values based on how much physical RAM your computer has or how many  applications you run simultaneously. Importantly, only use increments like 1024, 1280, 1536, 2048, 2560.
