Spok Mobile

Overview

Spok Mobile (formerly, Mobile Connect) SmartPaging App is the most reliable and secure method of receiving messages of the current messaging delivery services. Spok Mobile enables users to send HIPAA compliant secure two-way messages (including photos and videos). Spok Mobile utilizes WiFi and Cellular connections to send/receive messages, providing increased reliability. Spok Mobile includes an imbedded Directory, users can send messages without having to know the recipient’s Messaging ID.

Compatibility

The Spok Mobile app uses a "push" service that sends messages to your device through your carrier service and over Wi-Fi. The following device operating systems are compatible with Spok Mobile  (through standard carriers and Wi-Fi).

  • Android: Android 2.3.5+
  • iOS:  iOS 6.0+ (iOS 7.1+ preferred)

Getting started

To use secure two-way messaging, you must:

  • have a a five-digit Messaging ID (commonly referred to as a Paging ID)
  • have an MDM solution installed on your device

Installing Spok Mobile

Complete Spok Mobile Registration

  1. Go to mypager.stanford.edu from your mobile device.
  2. Click the Enroll in Spok Mobile option in the My Pager admin portal.
  3. Ensure you have an MDM solution installed on your mobile device, then click My device has MDM.
  4. Enter your Messaging ID to verify your identity, then click Send my code.  You will receive a page with a 4-digit verification code to all the paging delivery methods that are currently active on your Messaging ID.  Enter the Verification code, then click Continue.
  5. You are then prompted with the Smart Page Password screen.  If you know your Smart Page Password, click I know my password.  If you don't and would like to reset it, click Reset my password.
  6. Select your Primary Employer from the drop down.  Enter your SHC/SCH/SU ID, Email Address, and Email Address Confirmation.  Click Update my affiliation.
  7. Enter your device information and the cellular number of your device.  Click Enroll my device.  This is the last step of the Spok Mobile Registration.

Wait for Registration Confirmation Email from Spok Mobile & Download App

  1. Within 60 minutes you will receive a Registration Confirmation Email from Spok Mobile's automated system.  The email will contain a hyperlink to download the  Spok Mobile App, as well as your User ID and Password.  After hours, there may be a slightly longer delay in receiving the Registration Confirmation Email.
  2. From your mobile device, open the hyperlink to download the Spok Mobile App.  Downloading the app is free, but it does require that you use a Apple ID or Google Play ID.  You should use the ID that you normally use for downloading mobile apps.

Complete 2-Part Spok Mobile App Sign In Process (Device Registration & Stanford Paging Directory Authentication)

  1. When you first open your Spok Mobile App, you will be asked by your mobile device if you should allow Push Notifications.
IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU CLICK YES FOR THE APP TO WORK PROPERLY.
  2. You will then be prompted to sign in to complete a Device Registration.  Use the User ID and Password found in the Registration Confirmation Email.  Click Accept the License Agreement, then click Sign In.
  3. At this point, it looks like you are done with installation, but you need to complete the Stanford Paging Directory Authentication.
  4. To complete the Stanford Paging Directory Authentication, click on the top right Compose Icon to start composing an outbound page. Click in the To: box and start typing any name.  Before you can finish, you will be prompted by another Sign In window.  This window is the Sign In Authentication to the Stanford Paging Directory.  For the User ID, use your 5-digit Messaging ID.  For your Password, use your Smart Page Password.  Note:  If you need to reset your Smart Page Password at any time, visit mypager.stanford.edu and click Reset Smart Page password.

Configure App Settings

Click the Drawer Icon at the top left of your Spok Mobile Messages Inbox Screen, then click Settings.  Here you can set the ringtone, interval, and number of repeats for low, medium, and high-priority messages. Note: by default, messages are delivered as low priority. High and medium priority messages can only be sent by the page operator.

Note: other options such as push delivery notifications, templates, and chat view are not available at this time.

Device Changes (Upgrades/Replacements/Multiple Devices)

When upgrading or replacing a device, you MUST remove the app from the old device BEFORE going through this process on the new device. The concurrent use of the same registration ID (10-digit phone number), even unintentionally, results in sporadic and unreliable message delivery.

When adding an additional new device (example:  multiple phones or a phone + tablet), you MUST resubmit a Spok Mobile registration request at mypager.stanford.edu to get a new set of registration credentials for the additional device, and then use the Installing Spok Mobile process above with those new credentials.

Updates

App updates are distributed through your device's App Store. You may need to re-register your device after you install an update.
