Nurbek Tazhimbetov
Ph.D. Student in Computational and Mathematical Engineering, admitted Autumn 2016
BioI am a third year PhD student at the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME), interested in numerical linear solvers for PDEs. Prior joining to Stanford, I have studied at Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan. I was born and raised in Kazakhstan.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsCurrent research activities include: (1) modeling unstable miscible and immiscible flows in heterogeneous formations, (2) developing multiscale formulations and scalable linear/nonlinear solution algorithms for multiphase flow in large-scale subsurface systems, and (3) developing stochastic approaches for quantifying the uncertainty associated with predictions of subsurface flow performance.

David Thomas
Ph.D. Student in Computational and Mathematical Engineering, admitted Autumn 2017
Masters Student in Computational and Mathematical Engineering, admitted Autumn 2016BioI am an experimental astrophysicist with a strong background and interest in computational and mathematical methods. I currently spend most of my time developing new algorithms for the Active Optics System of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, which will help us better understand dark matter and dark energy. I also have developed a new experimental technique, star trail photometry, that provides a unique combination of time resolution and sky throughput. We will use this technique to carry out the first survey searching for short duration stellar variability. Probing this frontier can constrain a wide range of astrophysical phenomena ranging from theoretical models of Kuiper belt objects in our solar system to prompt optical emissions from extragalactic gamma-ray bursts.
