Life in the Residences

An Out-of-Class Experience

The essential conviction of Residential Education is that living and learning should be integrated, not separate; that formal teaching, informal learning, and personal support in residences is integral to a Stanford education.

Residential Education programs extend the classroom into the residences and complement the academic curriculum with activities and experiences essential to students' preparation for a life of leadership, intellectual engagement, citizenship and service.

A diverse system of housing provides students with a variety of educational settings including academic theme and focus houses, ethnic theme houses, self-managed and cooperative residences, apartments and suites in addition to traditional residences. Residences with first-year students, academically-linked houses and some upper-class houses have 35 faculty/senior staff serving as Resident Fellows. Students in peer leadership roles and administrative support staff advance the goals of Residential Education in all houses.

ResEd provides Stanford undergraduates a small community experience within a large research university.

Campus Neighborhoods

Each of our residences are geographically grouped into three neighborhoods of campus; East, West, and The Row.

East campus is situated between the graduate residences of Munger and Escondido Village. Most of our frosh residents reside within the Eastside of campus within Stern Hall and Wilbur Hall. Additionally, the residential complexes of Crothers/Crothers Memorial and Manzanita Park are also found within East campus.

West Campus borders the Stanford Golf Course and extends to Tresidder Memorial. The Westside of campus generally consists of upper class and 4-class houses with the four major residential complexes consisting of Florence Moore, Governor's Corner, Lagunita Court and Roble Hall.

The Row is located in the Northern section of campus and begins on Mayfield. This area of campus specializes in independent and apartment-style living with several Greek houses located within. Finally, Stanford provides an opportunity for students to live in an off-campus property, Oak Creek Apartments.
