Care and Treatment of Amyloidosis

What Is Amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis often affects many organs in the body, including the heart, liver, kidneys, and nervous system. This disease is caused by a build up of proteins, called amyloid fibrils, in various organs in the body. Because it is a relatively uncommon disease, it is frequently challenging to correctly diagnose amyloidosis.

Types of amyloidosis:

AA (secondary) amyloidosis

This protein is produced by the body in response to inflammation or infection. Prolonged high levels can lead to amyloid deposits. 

AL (primary) amyloidosis

A condition in which an abnormal protein called amyloid builds up in tissues and organs, affecting their shape and functionality.

Familial ATTR amyloidosis

An inherited disease in which the body makes a mutant form of a protein likely to form into amyloid fibrils.

Wild-type (senile) ATTR amyloidosis

Typically developes in patients 65 years of age or older. Protein that is deposited is the normal, non-mutated transthyretin protein.

  • Recent labs (including but not limited to serum free light chains, SPEP, UPEP)
  • Pathology reports from all biopsies related to the amyloid diagnosis
  • Recent clinical notes from any doctor involved with the amyloid diagnosis
  • Echocardiogram report (if applicable)
