The Hunting Ground: Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), the Clayman Institute for Gender Research, with support from the Office of Student Affairs, will be screening The Hunting Ground, a timely documentary about sexual assault on college campuses. After the screening, there will be a panel featuring the producer/director, Stanford's Title IX Coordinator, and the Director of the Office of Sexual Assault and Relationship Abuse Education and Response (SARA). Additionally, many other offices, such as the Women's Community Center, The Clayman Institute for Gender Research, and Stanford Students for Queer Liberation, have events this month. Participate in Stanford Denim Day

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), the Office of Sexual Assault and Relationship Abuse Education and Response (SARA) invites all of the Stanford community to wear denim on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 to support the national Denim Day campaign and raise awareness of sexual assault. What is Denim Day? The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling of the Italian Supreme Court to overturn a rape conviction. The justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. For the past 16 years the Denim Day campaign has continued this act of solidarity during SAAM. If you, your department, office, or organization are interested in participating, please contact the SARA Office at saraoffice@stanford.edu to request stickers and educational materials that will help you show your support and explain the event to others.
New Assistant Director for SARA Hired

The Title IX Office works with many colleagues across campus to help create a safe environment for all Stanford students. The Office of Sexual Assault & Relationship Abuse Response & Education (SARA) is an invaluable resource to students and a close partner of the Title IX Office. The SARA Office has announced the recent hiring of a new Assistant Director and we are pleased to join SARA in welcoming Carley Flanery to the Farm. Read the announcement from SARA here.
January is National Stalking Awareness Month

Stalking is Title IX prohibited conduct that the University defines as "engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person(s) that would cause a reasonable person to (a) fear for his or her safety or the safety of others, or (b) suffer substantial emotional distress." Stanford, It's On Us: We Will Not Stand By

Stanford, It's On Us: We Will Not Standby is a student organized program indicative of our pledge to recognize that non-consensual sex is sexual assault, our pledge to identify situations in which sexual assault may occur, our pledge to intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given, and our pledge to create an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported. The performance will help you learn through an interactive production featuring theater troupe interACT from Cal State Long Beach. More information is available here.
Task Force Town Hall Meetings

The Provost's Task Force on Sexual Assault Policies and Practices is seeking input from members of the campus community. Two town hall meetings have been scheduled – the first, a graduate student town hall, on Monday, Oct. 20 – and input is also welcomed via the task force website. More information is available here.

Cultural differences in interactions on romantic or sexual levels can be difficult to navigate while studying abroad: some behaviors might be very inappropriate in the US, but considered perfectly acceptable in the culture in which you are living, and vice-versa. Sexual harassment is a particularly difficult area because of the extreme variance in acceptable behavior between cultures. This event is Day One of a two-day conference. About the event: A special screening of the film Anita: Speaking Truth to Power, directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Freida Lee Mock. After the screening, the director, along with Professor Anita Hill, whose Senate testimony is at the center of the film, will hold a question and answer session moderated by Professor David Palumbo-Liu (Comparative Literature and CSRE). Sexual Harassment and Barriers to Advancement: What Has Changed Since the 1990s?

This event is Day Two of a two-day conference. About the event: Feminist icon Gloria Steinem once famously remarked that sexual harassment didn't have a name when she was young - "it was," she said "just life." That was before the revelations brought forward by a young Oklahoma law professor named Anita Hill at the Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas in 1991. Hill's testimony galvanized a generation of women, and transformed sexual harassment from "just life" to an important part of the American civil rights landscape.
