Stanford's New Course Evaluations

Course Evaluations

Welcome to the home of Stanford's new course evaluations, where faculty can learn how they were designed, how to use them, and how to interpret results.

Beginning in 2012, a thoughtful faculty committee chaired by Prof. Russell Berman, Professor of Comparative Literature and German Studies, designed a new course evaluation form that we are implementing this year. The new course evaluations are designed to:

  • Focus on learning

  • Increase student self-reflection

  • Provide instructors and departments with useful data

  • Be tailored and relevant to each course

  • Support broad Stanford priorities: using feedback to improve student learning, courses, and programs, and using analytics to address critical questions

Designed to generate truly constructive feedback, the new form allows you to add custom questions and ask about specific course elements.

The new forms are also quicker and easier for students to fill out, and the questions focus students' attention on their own learning. Some answers to one qualitative question will be made public: "What would you want another student to know about this class?"

We believe you'll get more comprehensive and helpful results, which will inform your own teaching and department-level discussions.
