that's an exception, +Jane Ellen Smith.  there's been a lot of research on the benefits of early education on things like IQ and dropout rates.  Just google for it you can see.  That in no ways diminishes what you as a parent has done, but for an average kid, early education is the right kid of investment.

I hate this style of presentation.  Does NPR think science is dry and needs slapstick to deliver it?

I have to say all the aclaime this movie has garnished and it is all BAD science! If such a disaster happened the world would know about it right away!! There are rescue craft waiting for immediate launch these days. Hollywood has a job of raising the bar of disbelief but this is ridiculous!! Both actors should be ashamed, but movie makers are all whores. Then again we all love our Whores, no matter what they sell.

I have known of Schlieren photography for probably 50+ years because of its use in aeronautic R&D - my father's field. This is the first time I have seen a description of HOW it is done - very cool. Being able to visualize sound/shock waves it important in many fields. (BTW, the distinction between "sound" and "shock" in air is minimal. They are waves of density change; if it is in a specific frequency and amplitude range, ears and brains interpret it as sound. When you hear the noise of something going by at supersonic speed - such as the crack of a bullet - you are hearing the shock wave caused by the object's faster-than-sound travel through the air.)

I've read that the birds often switch position. The lead bird may not be the same for the entire trip.
