Thinking Inside the Box
Linda A. Cicero
For a guy who’s permanently perched on his posterior, The Thinker gets around. In January, the Pensive One returned from a two-year stint at the North Carolina Museum of Art. The largest cast of Rodin’s iconic intellectual, Stanford’s version is 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs about a ton. Reinstallation in the Cantor Center’s Diekman Gallery involved a crew of six who hoisted the sculpture by chains and suspended it from a rolling gantry before lowering it onto a weighted pedestal and bolting it into place. Fortunately, there are no immediate plans for the work to resume its peripatetic pattern; The Thinker will be on display at Cantor for the foreseeable future.
