Our Staff

Our department is staffed with licensed, certified and highly trained technical staff in the fields of horticulture, pest management, turf management, arboriculture, water management and landscape construction and design. 

Ted Tucholski
Director, Grounds Services

Ted Tucholski, Director of Grounds, has been with Stanford University Grounds since 1995. After graduating from S.U.N.Y. at Syracuse with a Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture, he relocated to the Bay Area. He began working in commercial and residential landscape design-build firms and has worked in the field of commercial landscape maintenance.

Ed Gutierrez
Road Maintenance Supervisor

Edward Gutierrez has been with the University since the 1980's. He has been the Supervisor of the Grounds Services Road Maintenance and Construction Group since 1993. He oversees asphalt and concrete paving work, fence construction, road sign work, and site furnishing work (bike racks, bollards, etc.).

Mary Nolan
Grounds Services Manager

Mary Nolan has been with Stanford University Grounds Services since 1996. Originally from Ireland, Mary graduated from University College Dublin with an Agricultural Science degree specializing in Landscape Horticulture. She earned her MBA from University of Phoenix in 2011 and a QAC (Qualified Applicator Certificate) in 1999. After working in England for a number of years in the garden nursery business, she moved to California in 1994. She interned at Filoli Gardens in Woodside and worked with a private contractor before coming to Stanford University.

Max Pinedo
Tree, Horticulture, Pest Control, & Faculty/Staff Housing Supervisor

Max Pinedo has been with LBRE Grounds Services since 2008. He is the Manager for the Tree Program, Horticulture Support, Pest Management, and Faculty/Staff Housing. Max has an M.S. degree in Forest Science from the University of Alberta, Canada. He is a Certified Arborist. Before joining Stanford, Max worked in utility forestry for a consultant to Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and in commercial landscaping and arboriculture in the Bay Area. A native of the Peruvian Amazon, he has previously worked in forestry in Latin America and Canada.

Michael Burdzinski
Tree Program Supervisor

Mike has been an arborist at Stanford since 1996. He became the Tree Crew supervisor in 2010. After being raised in Illinois, gardening with his father, he studied Horticulture and Agriculture in Colorado. In early 1980 he migrated to the California Bay Area and has been part of the green industry ever since. Mike earned his Arborist certification in 1985.

David Reed
Grounds Services Supervisor

David began working at Stanford in 2002 and since that time has experienced a rewarding career in Golf Course Construction, Design, and in Operational Management. David graduated from Penn State University in 2001 with a degree in Advanced Turf Grass Management. David has a Qualified Applicator License and is certified in Irrigation and Maintenance. He is also a MaxiCom Water Management Operator. David has a great appreciation for Stanford and the opportunity to live out the job of his dreams here at the "Farm".

Ryan Cheers
Ground Services Supervisor

Ryan Cheers has been with Stanford University Land, Buildings and Real Estate, Grounds Services since 2015. He is the Supervisor for the Grounds Academic Turf Management team. He graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Horticulture with emphasis in Turfgrass Management from Iowa State University. Ryan worked in the golf course industry for 14 years before coming to Stanford University.

Penny Legakis
Administrative Associate

Penny Legakis is the Administrative Assistant for Grounds. Prior to starting at Stanford University in 2014, Penny was employed for 15 years in the Dental profession. She is a native Bay Area resident and is fluent in Greek. Penny is committed to her team and advancing her skills and knowledge.

Julie Day
Horticulturist

Julie Day has been with Stanford University Grounds Services since 1995. She is the Horticulturist who oversees and maintains the Tree, Plant and Irrigation inventory mapping, monitoring and reports for the areas maintained by Grounds. Julie earned her B.S degree in Horticulture from CPSU, San Luis Obispo and completed Mechanical Engineering AutoCAD from the College of San Mateo. Julie is skilled with Plant Identification, Arboriculture, Sustainability, Irrigation Systems, Soil Analysis, IPM (Integrated Pest Management), AutoCAD and ArcGIS Mapping, Plans Reviews and Reports. She earned her QAC (Qualified Applicator Certificate) in 1997, CLT-E (Turf and Ornamental Maintenance in 1992) and is a CLCA Member since 1998 and PAPA Committee Member since 1999.
