Pfeiffer Visiting Scholar Lecture Series

The Stanford University School of Medicine and the Center of Excellence in Diversity in Medical Education (COEDME), sponsors a quarterly lecture series in which distinguished minority faculty members and scholars from across the country deliver academic presentations on topics relating to minority health. This program was instituted in order to bring prominent minority faculty and scholars to meet with Stanford’s medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty during the academic year. All scholars are chosen by the School of Medicine’s minority medical student groups, specifically the Stanford Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), the Stanford National Medical Student Association (SNMA), the Stanford American Indian Medical Students (SAIMS), and the Asian Pacific American Student Association (APAMSA). Scholars are chosen based on their scholarly work and expertise on issues pertaining to the health care needs of minority communities.
The Pfeiffer lecture is timed in conjunction with on-campus activities that celebrate and highlight the history and contributions of Latinos, African Americans, Native American and Asian Americans. In fall quarter a prominent speaker chosen by LMSA presents on Latino health care issues. The visit and presentation is timed in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month. In winter quarter a prominent speaker chosen by SNMA presents on issues affecting the African American Community. The visit and presentation is timed to correspond with activities celebrating Black History Month. In the spring quarter a prominent speaker chosen by SAIMS presents on Native American health issues. The visit and presentation is timed during the Pow-Wow week at Stanford University. Also in the spring quarter a prominent speaker is chosen by APAMSA to present on Asian American health issues.
Presentations given by the Pfeiffer scholar is open to the Stanford community including the greater bay area. In addition, time is given during the visit for Stanford minority medical students and undergraduates to meet with the scholar in an informal setting. These informal meetings allow for dialogue between academic role models and students. The Pfeiffer scholar is also given the opportunity to meet with other prominent faculty, staff, and members of the Stanford community.
Pfeiffer presentations are wonderful opportunity for the Stanford and greater bay area community to learn more about the health care needs of minority groups in the United States. It is also an opportunity for the transfer of knowledge, experience and history to future minority physicians.
Open to all members of the Stanford medical community, this quarterly lecture series features minority faculty and scholars from all over the country. Speakers deliver academic presentations on topics relating to minority health, meet informally with attendees, and discuss a variety of subjects regarding career choices and medical issues.
