Stanford Geriatric Education Center (SGEC)

The Stanford Geriatric Education Center, under the direction of Nancy Morioka-Douglas, MD, MPH, provides multidisciplinary ethnogeriatric programs and curriculum materials to educate students and health professionals about the cultural issues associated with aging and health. The SGEC promotes education and research on aging, cultural competency, cultural beliefs and practices and health care delivery for ethnic minority elders. The multidisciplinary core faculty represents universities, community colleges and community-based organizations in ten California counties.

Funded continuously since 1987 by the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, the original core faculty members of the SGEC coined the word “ethnogeriatrics.” The SGEC is currently a cooperative project between Stanford University School of Medicine, San Jose State University, On Lok Senior Health Services, Laguna Honda Hospital, and Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, Inc.
