General Medical Disciplines Department of Medicine

Overview

Research in the Division of General Medical Disciplines covers a vast spectrum. Projects range from investigating different aspects of chronic disease, to the impact of health care disparities on various ethnic and social groups, to the health care needs of individuals in developing countries.  Researchers in GMD delve into the mental health issues affecting women veterans suffering from post traumatic stress and related psychiatric conditions. In the field of palliative care, fellows have the unique opportunity to explore a career in geriatric research through the Palo Alto Veterans Health Care System.

GMD also offers faculty development through the Stanford Faculty Development Center (SFDC) which was established in 1985 to disseminate faculty development programs for improving teaching and delivery of care to medical teachers across the country.  Over the past 24 years, the SFDC has played a significant role in national and international efforts to improve medical education through delivery of faculty development curricula by peer-trainers.  SFDC programs have been disseminated at local, regional, national levels in over 16 countries.
