The Hamid and Christina Moghadam Program in Iranian Studies, with the Daryabari Endowment in Persian Letters, is pleased to announce the launch of the Specialization in Iranian Studies Program as part of the recently approved Stanford Global Studies (SGS) Minor starting in Fall, 2015. The Specialization aims to provide Stanford undergraduates a global lens to explore Iranian societies across time and space . This Minor Program is available to all Stanford Undergraduates from any major.

SGS is a Division of Stanford’s School of Humanities and Sciences that fosters education and research in international and area studies in the School and in the university as a whole. Its mission is to promote the study and understanding of world affairs among Stanford students, faculty, and staff.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR

Students pursuing a Minor in Global Studies with a specialization in Iranian Studies must satisfy the following requirements during their undergraduate career at Stanford:

  1. Completion of GLOBAL 101, the SGS introductory course.
  2. Completion of one area-specific entry course that deals with Iran and the Middle East. This could be History 106B with permission of the Director.
  3. Completion of a minimum of at least 25 units of qualifying courses. Fifteen (15) units must be from the list of Core courses. The remaining 10 units can be chosen from the list of approved elective courses.
  4. At least 10 of the 25 units need to be completed at the home campus; the remaining 15 units could be completed in an approved study abroad program.
  5. Successful completion of two quarters of Persian language, or proven proficiency in the language.
  6. A capstone research project for up to 5 units. The project offers students enrolled in the specialization the option to conduct a major independent research paper related to Iran under faculty guidance. Students will present their work in an end-of-year Capstone Seminar with other SGS minors and led by SGS faculty.

HOW TO DECLARE A MINOR IN GLOBAL STUDIES WITH A SPECIALIZATION IN IRANIAN STUDIES

Students declaring a Global Studies Minor with Specialization, please:

1. Set up an appointment with the Iranian Studies Program Manager, Roma Parhad or stop by the Iranian Studies Program in Room 211, Encina Hall West. It is highly recommended that you register with the respective advisor.

2. Register through Axess, together with the specialization advisor, and select the Global Studies Minor.

3. Then complete and submit the Declaration or Change of Undergraduate Major, Minor, Honors, or Degree Program form with Roma Parhad to indicate which of the six specializations you are selecting.

If you encounter any problems with declaring in AXESS, you may submit a HelpSU to the Registrar’s Office (Request Category = Central Office Issues; Request Type = Registrar).

In the long term, there will be a system enhancement to allow students to declare the Minor and Specializations entirely online.  Prior to declaring a Global Studies Minor with Specialization, it is important that you meet with faculty and staff administering the relevant specializations to review degree requirements and to determine if the Global Studies Minor is a good fit for your academic interests.
