Residency Program in Laboratory Animal Medicine
The Comparative Medicine Department at Stanford University sponsors a residency training program in laboratory animal medicine. Along with a research focus, this 3-year program emphasizes the clinical, pathological, regulatory, and administrative aspects of laboratory animal medicine. The training program is officially recognized by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM). Successful program completion satisfies eligibility requirements for specialty board certification.
Stanford is considered a world leader in the advancement of science and technology and has a rich history of training top-notch comparative medicine scientists, veterinarian specialist in laboratory animal medicine and pathology, and veterinary externs. Stanford is a thriving residential campus and community. It sits on 8,000 picturesque acres of foothills and plains – once a horse farm belonging to Jane and Leland Stanford and still fondly known as "the Farm".
The University has extremely diverse research areas involving animals, en-compassing studies in the Schools of Medicine; Engineering; and Sciences. The University also has a Transgenic, Behavioral, Imaging, Cancer, and Stem Cell Cores.
The Department’s Veterinary Service Center (VSC) provides veterinary care to all animals used on campus. Our dedicated veterinary expertise includes specialists in: laboratory animal medicine, pathology, internal medicine, anesthesiology and preventive medicine.
Animal vivaria total more than 110,000 gross square feet in 19 buildings. Some unique features of facilities including rodent barrier, ABSL-3/ABSL-2 facilities, extensive surgical suites, small animal imaging, rodent behavioral cores, extensive aquatics and a field marine station.
Stanford University participates in the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP) as do many other Laboratory Animal Medicine postdoctoral training programs within the United States.
