Each year we train six to seven individuals as fellows in neonatal-perinatal medicine, and at least two fellows join the program each year.

1. One fellow serves as the key manager of the NICU to assist two faculty assigned to the NICU at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. Each fellow will usually begin her managerial role of the NICU on Saturday. It is generally 2 weeks in duration and ends Friday evening after a “hand-off.” The key ancillary members of the NICU team include neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs), pediatric residents, hospitalists, sub-interns and medical students as well as trainees on electives. Night coverage team includes the neonatology faculty, cross-covering fellow, NNP, hospitalists and residents.
2. Fellows lead delivery room management with direct faculty supervision. Services are provided by hospitalists, pediatric residents, NNPs and fellows as needed.
3. Fellows assist faculty, hospitalists, NNPs, and pediatric residents in providing the clinical services at hospital’s Intermediate Care Nurseries.

NOTE: Follow-up Clinics are one day per week, spaced out over the course of a year.  

Additionally, each fellow is required to complete 3 to 4 calls per month with <60 calls annually. Spread evenly throughout the entire year, this call schedule develops and enhances team leadership skills while providing hands-on training in policies and procedures.

Fellows invite speakers/faculty to the following conferences that they moderate, organize and schedule:

Weekly Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality Conference (Friday at 12:00 p.m.)

Journal Club: critically present a relevant journal article to the Division

Research Club: provide updates to group on research progress

Book Club: discuss important articles as group

Outreach Education: present at local and regional educational events

    - Friday didactic/discussion lectures at 11:00 a.m.

    - Daily 5-minute NeuroNICU teaching, when on NICU assignment

    - Monthly Clinical Consensus Conference

    - Monthly Division Research Meetings

    - Monthly Divisional QI meetings

    - Fetal Center Care Conference

    - Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Conference

    - CAPE Simulation Neonatal Resuscitation Instructorships (4-6 per year)

Fellows are encouraged to apply for membership in the Stanford Society of Physician Scholars (SSPS).
