A massively multiplayer online game requiring players to employ mathematical concepts could revolutionize the teaching of mathematics at the middle school level, says Stanford mathematician Keith Devlin. Devlin spoke at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting last week. Teacher educators from Chile, Hong Kong, India and Norway are convening on campus today for a weeklong institute designed to share the principles and practices of successful teacher education programs designed at Stanford. Among the speakers is Education Dean Deborah Stipek.

Yichao Wang, the visiting graduate researcher who suffered brain damage in a Feb. 3 collision between his bike and a car, died on Friday, Feb. 19.
