Truth, reconciliation: When should the past be past?

Paul Van Zyl, former executive secretary of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, was the keynote speaker at a recent panel that wrestled with the issue of translational justice, truth, reconciliation and religion. He was joined by Stanford scholars Helen Stacy and James Campbell.

Researchers develop low-cost ventilators for disasters

After learning that his hospital would be short on ventilators in the event of a flu pandemic, Matthew Callaghan sketched out concepts for an inexpensive ventilator on a napkin. A team led by Callaghan, now a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford, is close to launching such a product.

Trustees approve expansion of off-campus library

The Board of Trustees recently gave its nod of approval to expanding Stanford Auxiliary Library III, shown in a rendering at left. It also gave design approval for the West Campus Recreation Center and construction approval for the Jill and John Freidenrich Center for Translational Research.

  • Applications sought for SIGF: The office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education is accepting applications through March 31 for the Stanford Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowship Program (SIGF). Current doctoral students, ideally in their second or third year, who are pursuing interdisciplinary research are invited to apply for this three-year award.
