Intel is giving Stanford $2.5 million a year for five years to support a collaborative Intel Science & Technology Center, headed by computer scientist Pat Hanrahan, which will focus on 3-D graphics and other visual computing research. Intel plans to invest $100 million in similar university centers.

Elinor Ostrom, a 2009 Nobel laureate and political scientist, will deliver this year's Tanner Lectures on Human Values on Feb. 16 and 17. Stanford's Center for Ethics in Society and the President's Office will host the series, which is free and open to the public.

Faculty Senate meeting minutes from Jan. 20 are now available. Student leaders talked about such issues as academic advising, sexual misconduct and relationship abuse. The speakers were Deepa Kannappan of the Undergraduate
Senate; Angelina Cardona, president of the Associated Students of
Stanford University; and Justin Brown of the
Graduate Student Council.

- RecycleMania:
The annual RecycleMania competition begins Feb. 6, and faculty, staff and students are asked to reduce waste, recycle and compost. Last year Harvard edged out Stanford in the nationwide competition for the highest total recycling tonnage by just 50 tons.
