Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) is currently a North American organization that was founded at Yale’s philosophy department in 2010 to help combat some of the problems surrounding inclusion of members of underrepresented groups in academic philosophy. MAP now has over 30 chapters across the U.S, Canada, Great Britain, and Oceania. Its stated long term goals are to “contribute to improved department cultures and facilitate increases in participation of underrepresented groups in academic philosophy.”
We, members of the philosophy department at Stanford, hope to play a small role in the larger effort to accomplish these goals through our Stanford MAP Chapter.
Our chapter is dedicated to uncovering and understanding both the demographic dynamics within philosophy and their possible explanations, as well as discussing topics of relevance to diversity—From psychology (e.g., implicit bias) to political philosophy (e.g., affirmative action), from philosophy of race to gender studies. In doing so, we hope to promote camaraderie and an atmosphere of inclusion among students and faculty, as well as further departmental cohesion generally.
Events and Projects:
I. MonLun: every Monday, noontime.
II. Data Collection Projects (ongoing):
i. Stanford graduate admissions data.
ii. MAP project for developing a “resource for chapters interested in gathering data about the demographics of their department, undergraduate
climate, undergraduate perceptions of the major...etc.”
III. Stanford MAP speaker series (still in planning phases).
