SCALE is currently working with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) and CTB/McGraw-Hill (the primary contractor) to develop performance task "archetypes" and task items and specifications for use by SBAC task authors. SBAC is a 25 member state-led consortium founded to create assessments aligned to the new Common Core State Standards. SCALE has primary responsibility for training performance task writers and supporting their work throughout the task development process.
Working with experienced teachers, assessment experts, and content area specialists, SCALE has taken the lead in SBAC performance task development in mathematics and English/Language Arts across all grade levels. Throughout the summer of 2013, SCALE hosted performance task development institutes to expand task writers’ understanding of designing performance tasks. SCALE, along with the task writers, has produced 60 secure performance tasks (including archetypes) to be used in a spring 2014 field test by SBAC.
