They are a valuable resource for students who are interested in attending the Bing Stanford in Washington Program. Sonal Goyal
Sonal J. Goyal is a senior majoring in Economics. She participated in the Bing Stanford in Washington Program in Fall 2015, where she interned at the World Bank in the Department of Impact Evaluation. At the World Bank, Sonal quantified evidence for the lack of hand hygeine and injection practices in hospitals worldwide and analyzed insurance data to reduce the high accident rate of matatus (privately owned minibuses) in Kenya. She also prepared policy notes summarizing results from field experiments and assisted with a workshop for field coordinators. Her favorite SIW experiences include listening to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, watching Broadway theater on the New York Bing trip and eating Chef Tate's delectable creations every night.
Ashley Hammerbacher
Ashley Hammerbacher is a senior majoring in bioengineering. Ashley participated in the Bing Stanford in Washington program in the winter of 2015. She interned at the Department of Energy in the Office of Energy Policy and Systems Analysis. During her internship, she conducted energy policy research and analyzed the various economic, safety and environmental costs and benefits of the oil, natural gas, coal and renewable energy sectors. She also got the opportunity to assist with the compilation of the Quadrennial Energy Review (QER), which was the first ever review on U.S. energy infrastructure. Ashley loved most everything about the SIW program, but especially the faculty and the abundant art-related activities. She was extremely grateful for the spectacular performances and tours that they attended, especially the Mariinsky Ballet at the Kennedy Center and Tom Minter's "Blues for a Royal Flush."
Meelim Lee
Meelim Lee is a junior majoring in bioengineering. Meelim participated in the Bing Stanford in Washington Program in Winter 2015, interning at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Meelim worked on biotechnology and STEM participation initiatives and the White House Science Fair. While at SIW, Meelim really enjoyed watching the State of the Union with her SIW classmates, seeing the Flying Dutchman and Baskervilee, and braving the east coast winter weather to explore the city.
Myles Mann
Myles Mann is a senior majoring in economics and a coterm in Public Policy. Myles participated in the BSIW Program in Fall 2014, where he interned at the White House in the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. At the White House, Myles worked on outreach to youth constituencies and helped prepare for an anti-sexual assault campaign, early education initiatives, and the open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act. While at SIW, Myles especially enjoyed watching Fiddler on the Roof at the Areana Stage and attending the Bing trip to New York City. Myles can be contacted at the email address above with questions.
Hannah Meropol
Hannah Meropol is a senior majoring in Political Science. Hannah participated in the BSIW Program in Fall 2014, where she interned at the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, in its office of Near Eastern Affairs. At the State Department, Hannah read diplomatic cables, met with State officers and Near Eastern civil society organizations, attended think-tank events, and helped prepare senior officials for trips and meetings. One of her main duties was to edit the initial draft of the 2014 Iraq Human Rights Report, and she presented her own long-term reasearch project to an inter-bureau audience. During, her quarter at SIW, Hannah loved the chance to take policy focused classes and to live in Washington, D.C., a hub for multicultural arts, history, and food, and all realms of national policy discussion. In particular, she enjoyed running in Rock Creek Park and along the Potomac, and seeing La Boheme at the Kennedy Center. But more than anything, Hannah relished the chance to live, work, learn, and interact with the other amazing students on the program.
Lina Vadlamani
Lina Vadlamani is a junior majoring in Human Biology, with a focus on Global Health Policy, and minoring in economics. Lina participated in the Bing Stanford in Washington Program in Winter 2015, where she interned at John Snow Inc, a global health consulting firm. At JSI, she worked with the Center for Health Information, Monitoring and Evaluation on a project to better understand the impacts of social innovation and human centered design on global health initiatives and supported the Mobile Helath Center with their initiatives. At BSIW, Lina particularly enjoyed attending dance performances at the Kennedy Center, visiting the multitude of public museums unique to DC, and nighttime tours of the monuments. Lina hopes to use her BSIW experience to inform a future career in medicine and global health.
