Meet the Vice Provost

Harry J. Elam, Jr.

Harry J. Elam, Jr.
Freeman-Thornton Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education
Olive H. Palmer Professor in the Humanities
Bass University Fellow for Undergraduate Education.

As a scholar of social protest theater, performance and popular culture, and African American drama, Professor Harry Elam enjoys sharing his fascination with theater as a means of social change with students through his teaching, advising, and directing. He is the author and editor of seven books including, Taking It to the Streets: The Social Protest Theater of Luis Valdez and Amiri Baraka, The Past as Present in the Drama of August Wilson, winner of the Errol Hill Award and Black Cultural Traffic: Crossroads in Performance and Popular Culture. He was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre in April 2006. In March 2010, he directed Rent at the Roble Theatre on campus with undergraduates involved in all facets of the production and performance. Elam came to Stanford as professor of drama in 1990, and served as director of the Introduction to the Humanities program, chair of the Drama Department, and director of the Institute for Diversity and the Arts prior to his appointment as vice provost in 2010. At Stanford he has been awarded six different teaching awards among them, the ASSU Award for Undergraduate Teaching, the Humanities and Sciences Deans Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Bing Teaching Fellowship for Undergraduate Teaching.

Elam invites undergraduates to take advantage of all that Stanford offers and to discover their own purposeful and rewarding pathways through the university. He hopes that, by exploring the courses, programs, opportunities, and advising available on the Undergrad website, students will become inspired and will find the communities that will support them as they create their personal Stanford journey.
