Overview

Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the world's largest and most spectacular urban national parks, hugs the California coastline for nearly 60 miles around the San Francisco Bay Area. The park chronicles 200 years of history, from Native American culture, Spanish Empire frontier, California Gold Rush, evolution of American coastal fortifications, and growth of urban San Francisco; comprising of 19 separate ecosystems & home to 1,273 plant/animal species. There are hundreds of ways to experience the park including horseback riding, ranger-led programs, bicycling, hiking, eco-tourism and sightseeing. The National Park Service preserves America’s most special places so that all my enjoy them, now and in the future.

Position Description

The position is in the park’s Branch of Cultural Resources, which is responsible for the preservation and management of the extraordinary range of historic properties, from Gold Rush era shipwrecks to Cold War era guided missiles, and pastoral dairy ranches to the worlds’ most famous prison.

Three Gold Rush era homes at historic Fort Mason are the keystones of one of the oldest intact streetscapes in San Francisco. Once occupied by the city’s early mercantile, social and literary elite, these homes were taken over during the Civil War and used by the Army as officer family housing as the once-isolated neighborhood was converted into a military post. Now these historic buildings are leased as residences and are in need of preservation treatment.

Under the guidance of a seasoned historical architect, the intern would research the history of these important homes, and document the nature of their physical evolution over time, through research in park and local area archives and by on-site inspection of the buildings. The resulting work will be used to compile historic structure reports that will serve as baseline data for future repair and rehabilitation efforts.

Qualifications

Applicants should have experience in research methodology and the ability to assimilate and evaluate data against objective criteria (for instance, the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties). A willingness to work in outdoor settings as well as in office and libraries is desirable, as is curiosity, enjoying solving puzzles, and an ability to work independently to reach a goal, while adhering to well-defined standards and guidelines. A background or interest in history, archeology, architecture or graphic design is ideal but not necessary for consideration.

Compensation

All housing and transportation arrangements will be the responsibility of the intern. A Bill Lane Center stipend will be provided as compensation.

Position Description:

Qualifications:

Applicants should have experience in research methodology and the ability to assimilate and evaluate data against objective criteria (for instance, the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties). A willingness to work in outdoor settings as well as in office and libraries is desirable, as is curiosity, enjoying solving puzzles, and an ability to work independently to reach a goal, while adhering to well-defined standards and guidelines. A background or interest in history, archeology, architecture or graphic design is ideal but not necessary for consideration.

Compensation:

All housing and transportation arrangements will be the responsibility of the intern. A Bill Lane Center stipend will be provided as compensation.
