Artwork

Five Artistic Monuments Illustrate School's Commitment to Change

Monument to Change as it Changes
It looks like a massive wall of paint chips come to life, but actually it is a computer-controlled array of 2,048 "flip digit" modules like those on departure and arrival boards at European train stations, but with colored cards instead of letters and numbers. As the cards flip around within each module, they create a pleasant fluttering sound and a mesmerizing, ever-evolving set of patterns and images.

Hours of Operation

  • Monday through Thursday – 7:30 am to 11:00 pm
  • Friday - 7:30 am to 9:00 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday - 9:00 am to 9:00 pm

Monument to Change as a Verb
It hangs near the TA Associates Café and consists of 300 glossy black panels lit from behind with LEDs. Each panel is printed with an adverb that can be used to modify the verb "change": intangibly, profitably, fearlessly, brutally, satisfactorily, and so on. Sometimes the board lights up with groups of synonyms or antonyms; other times it blinks in arresting visual patterns.

Cornerstone of Change
Located at the base of the Gunn building across from the Co-Lab on Knight Way, it is "dedicated to the things that haven't happened yet and the people who are about to dream them up."

Monuments to the Unknown Variables
Located in the McCoy Family Courtyard are a set of benches shaped like academic equation components [x] and [y].

Monument to Your Future Collaborators
This collection of footprints near the Bass Center were inspired by Knight's own distinctive waffle footprints and the quotation at the school entrance.

Knight Welcome Quote
Knight's own distinctive waffle footprints and quotation are at the school entrance. The gateway piece was designed by Steve Sandstrom of Sandstrom Partners Inc., a Portland, Ore., design and advertising firm.

Flame Birds
By popular demand, the southwest entrance features one piece of art from the old campus: François Stahly's 1961 bronze Les Oiseaux Flammes, "The Flame Birds."

Bicycles

Bike racks are available at various locations around the GSB for your convenience; adjacent to Gunn building along Arguello, along Serra Street, and off of Campus Drive next to the Bass Center and behind the Faculty buildings.

The GSB has 3 bicycles available for school related business. If you would like to borrow a bicycle, the bike needs to be reserved in the MARRS reservation system and the keys need to be picked up in W130. If you have any questions please send us an email and we will assist you with a bike reservation. Please note: GSB Facilities and Hospitality provides bike helmets and locks; you are required to ensure the bike is locked when parked.

You may purchase up to 8 hours of parking at any machine ($12.00 maximum/day). The machines accept Visa or MasterCard, bills, or coins. If you do not use your credit card, please bring cash in smaller denominations because these machines do not issue change.

More information about parking at the Center.

Recycling

Former Dean Robert Joss emphasized, "Progress on environmental sustainability will only come about if businesses act differently, and if the organizations and systems designed to promote sustainable behavior are constructed and managed in the most effective manner." With that vision, the course was set for the Knight Management Center to be an example of business leading change.

We invite you to join with us in participating in the GSB Recycling Program. With your help, we can aim to reduce the waste that we produce each day during business operations.

The GSB currently has a recycling program for the following areas:

Please visit the Stanford University Website for detailed information on recycling:

If you have questions regarding recycling or need more information about central recycling locations, please submit a request on our form. Thanks for your help eliminating waste at the GSB!

Workspace FAQs

Our buildings were designed to be as green as possible and achieve a LEED Platinum rating.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally-recognized green building certification system. The green features of our campus achieve a 46% power reduction vs. traditional buildings their size because of specific design features in a number of areas including heating and cooling and lighting. In order to assist with general campus usage we have answers to a few workspace FAQs below.

Heating and Cooling
Typically, two offices share a thermostat and are considered a "zone." Thermostats are "read-only" and send the temperature to the automated Building Management System. Temperature cannot be adjusted at the thermostats.

Active beams are located in the ceiling and are controlled by the Building Management System and are used to heat and cool. If one of the offices in a zone has an open window, the heating/cooling process stops for offices within that zone. The area remains ventilated.

Lighting
Lights have three positions: on, 50% on, or off. When you enter an office, a motion sensor is activated and the lights turn on at 50% capacity. After 30 minutes of inactivity the sensor will turn the lights off. The Daylight Sensor will then adjust the lighting level according to the amount of daylight in the room. If more light is needed, it will increase the amount of light within 20 seconds. If it detects less light is needed, it will reduce the light level within 10 minutes. On a bright, sunny day, it is likely that your lights will turn off completely. If you lower your window shades and/or if the amount of daylight in the room changes, the Daylight Sensor adjusts the lighting level accordingly. The lights can always be turned off by using the light switch, but they cannot be turned on brighter than the Daylight Sensor allows.

Circulation Fans
Ceiling fans are controlled by an individual wall switch. The fans can be controlled at three speeds: high, medium and low (blades will spin counter-clockwise). In cooler weather, activate the "reverse" button by first selecting a fan speed and then pressing the "rev" button. This will reverse the direction of the fan blades and push warm air down (blades will spin clockwise). Fans will turn off after the motion detectors register 30 minutes of inactivity. Lights will also go out.
