RET Program

ReNUWIt’s summer Research Experience for Teachers (RET) Program provides a mentored research experience for high school and middle school teachers. Teachers spend 8 weeks in the lab, and develop lesson plans to bring back to their classrooms. Our RETs are hosted through the Summer Research Program for Teachers (SRPT)  at Stanford and Berkeley Engineering Research Experience for Teachers (BERET) at Berkeley.

2014 Program Application Deadline: March 31, 2014 (SRPT and BERET)

Lead: Dr. Pam McLeod

Young Scholars Program

The summer Young Scholars Program provides a mentored research experience for local high school students. Students spend 7 weeks in ReNUWIt labs, and participate in personal/professional development and enrichment activities. They present research posters at the end of the summer, and receive certificates upon completion of the program. Our Young Scholars are hosted through the Raising Interest in Science and Engineering (RISE) Program at Stanford and Dr. Nirmal Khandan at NMSU.

2014 Program Application Deadlines: February 17, 2014 (RISE); April 1, 2014 (NMSU)

Lead: Dr. Pam McLeod (Stanford) and Dr. Nirmal Khandan (NMSU)

Summer Teacher Institute

Each summer, teachers from local school districts participate in the Summer Teacher Institute at CSM. The Institute is held in collaboration with the Center for Assessment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CA:STEM) and the Bechtel K-5 Educational Excellence Initiative. ReNUWIt researchers develop and lead two days of water sustainability workshops as part of the Institute.

Lead: Dr. Barbara Moskal

City Design Challenge

ReNUWIt co-developed a water-based City Design Challenge in partnership with the Ingenuity Lab at the Lawrence Hall of Science. Challenge participants learn about stormwater as they design and build model cities, then test them to see what happens to water and pollution during rain events. The ReNUWIt Challenge was featured in the Ingenuity Lab during February 2013 and February 2014.

The City Design Challenge has also traveled to the Orange County Water District Children’s Water Education Festival in 2013 and 2014. It has been adapted for classroom lessons at King Middle School in Berkeley, and was featured at the March 2014 Math & Science Night at Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley.
