Pediatric and obstetric health leaders from Stanford Children’s Health and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford are frequently highlighted in local and national media for providing world-class, extraordinary care to children and expectant mothers. Bay Area vaccine controversy reignites in time for Super Bowl San Jose Mercury News 02/06/16. This article discusses how billboards questioning the safety of vaccines have popped in the Bay Area. Bionic pancreas improves glycemic control in children Healio 2/5/16. According to research in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, children with type 1 diabetes assigned to a bihormonal bionic pancreas system for 5 days while attending a diabetes camp saw reduced plasma glucose concentrations, fewer hypoglycemic episodes and lower frequency of carbohydrate interventions than children assigned insulin pump therapy. Young girl with rare brain cancer rallies social media support Kansas City Star 02/03/16. An 8-year-old Kansas girl who has diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG, a rare brain cancer, has rallied social media support. Michelle Monje, MD, PhD, who is exploring the new use of an existing drug to treat DIPG, is mentioned. 

Ex-49-er Vernon Davis visits hospital twice during Super Bowl week for Denver Broncos superfan KTVU Fox 2 and multiple affiliates across the county; NBC Bay Area; Mercury News; TMZSports.com; DenverBroncos.com; Fox Sports  2/2/16. Super Bowl week brought unexpected excitement for a big Denver Broncos fan at the hospital. Oncology and heart transplant patient Alex Walter, 18, was featured on our Facebook page as a superfan, calling out to the Broncos to fulfill his wish to meet a player. A day later, ex-Niner and now Bronco tight end Vernon Davis surprised Alex at the hospital school. Later in the week Davis reached out to the hospital again. This time, he had news that Levi’s Stadium was giving Alex tickets to SB50.

As part of our community education programs, Heart to Heart seminars for adolescents and parents are hosted at the hospital as well as other Packard Children’s facilities. Health educator Rob Lehman, MD, is featured in this blog and podcast about his efforts to change the conversation around puberty by empowering fathers and demonstrating helpful ways to talk about sex and puberty.

Experimental oxygen therapy for San Jose mom saves life of unborn baby KTVU Fox 2; ABC 7 (also affiliates in Chicago, ); Mercury News and all Bay Area News Group outlets; 2/1/16. A first-ever patient treatment to save an unborn baby with a rare heart defect. Oxygen therapy given to a mom and her unborn child turned out to be more successful than doctors could have ever imagined. Theresa Tacy, MD; David Axelrod, MD; Katherine Bianco, MD; were interviewed and Frank Hanley, MD, was mentioned.

The Process for Early Assessment, Resolution and Learning (PEARL) program at Stanford Health Care and Packard Children’s works with patients who have been wronged to apologize and provide remuneration, preventing excessive lawsuits. 

Fast, accurate cystic fibrosis test developed at Stanford Future of You blog on NPR.ORG; Kaiser Health News 2/1/16. Stanford researchers have developed a new test to screen newborns accurately and quickly for cystic fibrosis. Iris Schrijver, MD, is co-author of the study.
