Preetha Basaviah Appointed as Assistant Dean of Pre-Clerkship Education
It is with pleasure that we announce the appointment of Dr. Preetha Basaviah to the position of Assistant Dean for Pre-Clerkship Education. Dr. Basaviah will oversee the required MD program curriculum in the pre-clerkship years, currently years one and two. She will also provide leadership for the pre-clerkship course director group (PCD). Dr. Basaviah will continue her outstanding stewardship of the Practice of Medicine course series, though she will be gradually transitioning day-to-day responsibilities to her fabulous group of faculty colleagues and staff. Key among her tasks will be the continued integration of our curriculum between basic and clinical sciences, and aligning the pre-clerkship program to assure optimal preparation for clerkship experiences.
Dr. Basaviah is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine (Division of General Medical Disciplines). In addition to her role as Director of the Practice of Medicine Course (POM), she is also one of the founding members of the Educators for CARE(E4C). She attended medical school at Brown University, and then completed residency, chief residency work, and a medical education fellowship at Harvard. She then served as Associate Firm Chief and one of the first hospitalists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, before being recruited to UCSF. At UCSF, Dr. Basaviah worked as a hospitalist and co-directed doctoring courses for medical students.
We recruited her to Stanford in 2006, to her current role as POM Course Director. In addition to this and her participation in the E4C program, she attends in inpatient and outpatient general medicine. She has written articles and book chapters in medical education, clinical skills, and hospital medicine. She has actively participated in Society of Hospital Medicine, AAMC, Association of Chiefs and Leaders in General Internal Medicine, and Society of General Internal Medicine at regional and national levels by leading education committees or national meetings. She has served as a Harvard Rabkin Education Fellow, Harvard Macy Scholar, UCSF Teaching Scholar, Stanford Faculty Development Center Scholar and Stanford Faculty Fellow. She has won numerous awards as an educator, most recently the 2011 Society of General Internal Medicine National Award for Medical Education Scholarship.
We are delighted to have Dr. Basaviah in this important role. Her contributions to medical student education have been marvelous, and we know that in this new role she will help lead us into a period of continued growth and innovation in medical student teaching.
