STEP 4: Call the NIH Scientific Program Officer
Once you find a program announcement and an institute you think might apply to your research: You are strongly encouraged to call the NIH institute scientific program officer listed on the NIH program announcement to discuss your eligibility and your research before you begin your application. The NIH program officials will help you determine if you are considering the correct institute (i.e., NCI, NHLBI) and program announcement (K01, K08, etc.) If there are multiple participating institutes: see the NIH institute table of contacts for eligibility, institute-specific criteria, and contact persons.

STEP 5: Sign up for one 3 hour NIH K Award Grantsgov Computer Lab Session
see below >> for sessions that are currently available.
A list of 3-hour computer lab grants.gov sessions are offered before each standard deadline. The lab is equipped with a PC for each student. Participants are able to download and work on their application forms, and learn about internal Stanford procedures and NIH policies. These courses are conducted by Research Process Managers (RPMs) from the Research Management Group (RMG) and are available for Stanford researchers and are RECOMMENDED for ALL K Award applicants.

Citizenship
By the time of award, all K award applicants must be a citizen or a non-citizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (i.e., possess a currently valid Permanent Resident Card USCIS Form I-551, or other legal verification of such status).

Citizenship Exception: NIH K99/R00 award only : U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required for all K awards except for the K99/R00 postdoc-to-faculty transition award>>

Visa Information. The K99/00 allows for an applicant to be on a visa that allows them to remain in the country long enough to complete the research project. If you have questions on your visa or status, have your department administrator contact the Bechtel International Center >>. Required training for all postdoctoral fellows and optional for Instructors and faculty who are submitting NIH K series applications.

How will this lab session help me?
We will be downloading your REAL NIH K Series application and completing some of the administrative sections in these hands-on lab sessions. This training is completely web based. We will also be downloading and completing required Stanford-specific internal documents. Research Process Managers (RPM) from the Research Management Group (RMG) will be on hand to assist each of you with your actual application.

Who can sign up for these sessions?
Grantsgov K Award computer lab sessions will be offered for those individuals who are submitting applications for the next standard K Career Development Award deadline and the next standard resubmission deadline.

FAQ's
1. If I sign up for the computer lab session, am I commited to submit an application for the next standard deadline?

No, taking the class is not a commitment to submit. Often, attendees delay submitting their proposal until the next cycle. And, those same attendees who delay often choose to attend a second time closer to their deadline.


2. Can we bring our own iPad/laptop to the course to fill out electronic forms?

The lab is equipped with a PC for each student and we will upload the application to the Stanford eSUBMIT system before the end of the session. The eSUBMIT system is an online system which allows you to download your application from any location with an internet connection and a SuNET ID.

3. Will I need to bring my cell phone or tablet so I can acces the 2-step authentication code during the session?

Yes. Please bring your cell phone or tablet to the session so you can acess your two step authentication code.

Candidates for this award must have a research or health-professional doctoral degree, must have completed at least three years of postdoctoral training or equivalent and must be within 10 years of his/her terminal research degree or medical residency, whichever date is later. International Research Scientist Development Award (IRSDA) (K01) (PAR-15-291)
John E. Fogarty International Center
NIH will contribute up to $ 75,000 per year toward the salary of the career award recipient for 3 to 5 years.
NIH will contribute $30,000 per year for 3 to 5 years toward the research development costs of the award recipient, which must be justified and consistent with the stage of development of the candidate and the proportion of time to be spent in research or career development activities.
The purpose of the International Research Scientist Development Award (IRSDA) is to provide support and protected time (three to five years) to advanced postdoctoral U.S. research scientists and recently-appointed U.S. junior faculty (at least two years beyond conferral of doctoral degree) for an intensive, mentored research career development experience in a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) leading to an independently funded research career focused on global health. FIC invites applications from early-career investigators from any health related discipline who propose career development activities and a research project that is relevant to the health priorities of the LMIC.

The purpose of this award is to attract to NIH-relevant research those investigators whose quantitative science and engineering research has thus far not been focused primarily on questions of health and disease. The K25 award will provide support and “protected time” for a period of supervised study and research for productive professionals with quantitative (e.g., mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, imaging science, informatics, physics, chemistry) and engineering backgrounds to integrate their expertise with NIH-relevant research. The candidate should have demonstrated professional accomplishments consonant with his or her career status, and should have demonstrated experience or interest in pursuing research (including research outside of biomedicine, behavior, bioimaging, or bioengineering).

This intensive, mentored research career development experience is expected to lead to an independently funded research career. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications from LMIC scientists from any health related discipline that propose career development activities and a research project that is relevant to the health priorities of their country.

K99/R00 Citizenship- eligibility

For most K awards U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is a requirement. However, the K99/R00 award is the only one that permits non-citizens/permanent residents to apply. For non-U.S. citizen/permanent residents, the applicant U.S. institution for each phase of the application (K99 or R00) is responsible for determining and documenting in the application that the applicant investigator’s visa will allow him or her to remain in this country long enough to: (a) transition to an independent research career in the U.S. during the proposed mentored (K99) phase and/or (b) be productive on the research project in the U.S. for the duration of the proposed independent research (R00) phase.

Visas: Per clarification from the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, foreign registered postdoctoral fellows are here on J-1, H-1B/TN visas. Individuals with these J-1, H-1B/TN visas may be eligible to apply for the K99/R00 award as long as their departments document in their application, per the guidelines above, that their visas will allow them to remain in the country during the proposed mentored K99 mentored phase here at Stanford and be productive on the research project in the U.S. for the duration of the proposed independent research (R00) phase.
