  • Fire Prevention Week is October 3rd - 9th
Contributed by Assistant Fire Marshal, Alison Pena

Each October the National Fire Protection Association designates a week as Fire Prevention Week. This year that week will be the 3rd through the 9th and the safety theme for this year is TEST YOUR SMOKE ALARMS.

Smoke detectors/alarms are essential for residences and here at Stanford every student dorm room is equipped with one. You should already be testing your smoke detector once a month but if it has been awhile the NFPA’s campaign is a gentle reminder. Later in October when we change our clocks at the closure of daylight savings time you will again be reminded to change the battery in your smoke detector. A good practice unless you’ve purchased a smoke detector equipped with a 10 year lithium battery. If you have, then good for you; you will never need to change the battery during the 10 year life-span of your smoke detector.

This year’s campaign has reminded me that the smoke detectors in my home are now 10 years old. So you might see me at the hardware store this month. This time I’m buying the smoke detectors equipped with the 10 year battery. For more information go to http://www.nfpa.org

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is hosting a Laboratory Environmental Health and Safety Fair Thursday, October 14, 11:30 am to 3:30 pm at Fairchild Auditorium.

Over 50 vendors of laboratory safety, personal protection, and ergonomically designed equipment will be available to show and discuss their products such as: hand, eye, face protection, ergonomic pipetting, first aid, disposable safety garments, ergonomic computer equipment, spill cleanup materials, recycling, safety signage, and more!

There will also be a Laboratory Ergonomics Training class provided at 1:30 pm. Pizza and door prizes will be given away. Please pass the word around your department and post this Lab Safety Fair flyer where interested employees and students will see it. We hope to see you there!

Professional Opportunity: Southwest Regional EH&S Seminar
Contributed by Associate Vice Provost, Larry Gibbs

The Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) is sponsoring two regional EH&S seminars and workshops. The southwest seminar, to be held on October 13 and 14 and hosted by the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nevada, will focus on the basics of developing and effectively managing a campus EHS program with an emphasis on small campuses with limited resources.

These regional seminars are intended to make valuable health, safety and environmental management information more accessible to professionals that are often not able to attend national events, and also to establish a rapport with other professional colleagues from campuses in the region.

Hopefully you or some of your colleagues can take advantage of this professional opportunity. Click here to print a brochure and registration form.

Comments from attendees at the first set of seminars held in the Spring of 2004 included:
“Lots of good information. Well-adapted to a variety of academic settings.”
“Very knowledgeable. Guided discussion well by asking more probing questions.”
    “Very timely topics; thorough presentation.”
“We have been waiting, you delivered.”
“This was great information and a great idea!”

The EH&S Health Physics Group Welcomes LeAnne Amoroso
Contributed by Communications and Training Specialist, Susie Claxton

LeAnne Amoroso is our newest Health Physicist at Environmental Health and Safety. She has taken over the duties of inspecting radioactive packages that the University receives. She ensures that all authorizations are in place and that packages are safe before delivery to the authorized research group.  She is also responsible for outgoing packages containing radioactive materials. LeAnne surveys and inspects research labs at Stanford and VAPA-HCS to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations.  You might also see her auditing your CRA or assisting you with starting a new CRA.

LeAnne will also be working in our laser safety program. She will be inspecting research labs with lasers, assisting researchers with identifying and correcting deficiencies. She will be participating in training laboratory personnel on the main university campus and at the medical center on policies and procedures for the safe use of lasers.

You may already know LeAnne, because she has been with EH&S for 4 years.  She was previously part of the Hazardous Waste Group, helping pick up Radioactive and Chemical waste as well as being in charge of the Chemical Redistribution Program and lab clean outs. Prior to her work with Stanford, LeAnne worked as a chemist at a local Bay area company that provided service to EH&S.

    Surplus Chemical Program Gains Popularity
Contributed by Environmental Specialist, Heather Perry

EH&S’ Surplus Chemical Program continues to gain momentum as interest in the program increases. Participation is widespread across many departments, including the Schools of Medicine, Engineering and other units.

EH&S encourages all departments to carefully review our on-line inventory of free, unused and unopened chemicals prior to purchasing their own chemicals. EH&S will deliver the chemicals promptly to the requesting laboratory. We maintain an inventory of over 300 chemicals available for immediate use. Participation in the program not only reduces purchase and disposal costs. It also reduces the significant environmental impacts associated with chemical waste disposal.

For more information or to participate in the program, go to: http://freechemicals.stanford.edu.
