Fencers Look Sharp

STANFORD, Calif. – The youthful Stanford fencing team started the 2016 season with strong performances on Sunday at UC San Diego.

The men swept the Western Invitational and Western Fencing Conference Championships, while the women finished third and second, respectively.

“I was very pleased with our results,” said head coach Lisa Milgram. “We traveled with 16 freshman and they all fenced well. Both teams showed strength, passion and sportsmanship.”

The men’s squad went 5-0, defeating the University of Incarnate Word (17-10), UCSD (17-10), Vassar (20-7), Air Force (18-0) and California Institute of Technology (24-3).

Top performers were freshman Sean Strong (5-1), freshman Gabe Weininger (5-5), sophomore Harrison MacRae (9-3) and freshman Tristan Krueger (8-2) in epee; freshman Jeffrey Dalli (10-2), freshman Royce Wang (9-3), freshman Jose Recinto (8-3) and senior David Beam (6-4) in sabre; and senior Justin Lee (9-0), junior Stephen Aman (9-1), sophomore Andrew Cornman (7-3) and sophomore Darren Mei (10-1) in foil.

On the women’s side, Stanford finished 4-2, beating UIW (24-3), California Institute of Technology(24-3), Air Force (17-10) and Vassar (16-11), but fell to UCSD (15-12) and Northwestern (10-7).

Standouts included sophomore Rebecca Rose (9-5), freshman Belinda Mo (5-2), freshman Chantel Yang (9-4) and freshman Adrienne Yang (5-7) in epee; junior Alexa Rohan (7-4), freshman Carly Weber Levine (14-2), freshman Valerie Garcia (13-3) and freshman Claire Zau (3-2) in sabre; and sophomore Cindy Torma (7-11), freshman Anna Widder (7-11) and sophomore Christie Dawson (10-8) in foil.

Stanford resumes competition Jan. 30-31 at the Northwestern Duel Meet in South Bend, Indiana.
