STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford senior men’s golfer David Boote has been selected to the European team to take part in the Bonallack Trophy, the first time in four years a Welsh player has been picked for the event.

Boote and the 12-man European team will compete against the best amateur players from the Asia-Pacific region in the international match played at Vidago Palaca Golf Course in Portugal from March 16-18.

Europe is the defending winner of The Bonallack Trophy, which is based on a Ryder Cup style format, after winning in India two years ago.

A human biology major from Surrey, England, Boote has excelled in recent international competition, finishing fourth in the South American Amateur Championship in Peru, following his wins at the Welsh Amateur and Order of Merit titles last year.

“I was very pleased to hear of my selection to the European Team for the Bonallack Trophy,” said Boote. “It's a long way to travel from San Francisco to Portugal for the event, but I am very much looking forward to playing at Vidago Palaca.

“Fortunately, I am slightly ahead of my academic unit count for my degree and I have now almost completed my medical internship. This, and a slight gap in my college playing schedule, gives me the opportunity to play in Portugal without missing a collegiate event.”

Soon after Boote returns to The Farm, he will join the Cardinal for The Goodwin (March 24-26) held at Stanford Golf Course.
