BERKELEY, Calif. – The 122nd outdoor track and field season in Stanford history begins Saturday when several athletes compete in the Cal Opener at Edwards Stadium.

It’s more like a soft opening for the Cardinal, which still has the indoor season to complete with the NCAA Championships March 11-12 in Birmingham, Alabama. Stanford’s outdoor season opens in earnest with the Stanford Invitational April 1-2.

Notes: In anticipation of rain, Stanford most likely will send only three athletes to the meet, all in the men's 800 meters. The Cardinal was going to bring several throwers and pole vaulters, but they likely will not go.

Instead, the meet will mark the collegiate debut for two freshmen: Daniel Book and Brian Smith in the men’s 800. In addition, sophomore Christian White, a freshman in eligibility outdoors, will run in the same race.
