STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford had a tough day at the plate Saturday, producing two runs and four hits in 12 innings, and dropped decisions against Cal Poly and Tulsa.

Playing through stormy conditions throughout the day, the Cardinal (11-10) had trouble getting its offense going a week after producing 50 runs in five games at its most recent tournament at Hawai’i. Stanford also had some trouble defensively, making three errors in each game.

The Cardinal faced big offensive performances by Cal Poly and Tulsa, however, as those teams combined for 21 runs against Stanford – both earning run-rule victories. The Cardinal fell to the Mustangs 10-2 in five innings and lost to the Golden Hurricane 11-0 in six innings.

Kylie Sorenson paced Stanford on the day, going 3-for-5 with a home run and a double. Kayla Bonstrom registered the lone other hit for Stanford against Tulsa.

Against Cal Poly, Sorenson homered and doubled but Stanford was unable to generate enough offense to keep pace with the Mustangs.

Sorenson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to provide the Cardinal its only runs on the day.

Stanford had trouble getting going offensively otherwise. Cal Poly (15-5) pitcher Sierra Hyland (9-3) was strong in the circle and held the Cardinal to two runs on two hits en route to racking up 10 strikeouts.

Carolyn Lee (6-6) got the start in the circle for Stanford and went 3.0 innings, permitting eight runs on eight hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

Kaitlyn Lagattuta came in as relief in the fourth inning and did well to halt the Mustangs’ offense.  She held Cal Poly to two runs – none earned – on three hits and one walk in 2.0 innings.

Stanford was undone by a big second inning by Cal Poly, which rallied for seven runs on six hits with two outs. The Mustangs capitalized on Stanford errors in the third and fifth innings to add three runs and take a 10-0 lead.

The Cardinal got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lauren Frost led off with a walk and Sorenson hit a two-run home run to deep left-center field. It was Sorenson’s sixth home run of the season and fifth in the past seven games.

Stanford’s offensive troubles continued against Tulsa. The Cardinal managed a hit in the first and third innings but could not break through against the Golden Hurricane.

Lee made her second start of the day and did well to keep Stanford within striking distance, permitting just three runs through the first four innings.

Tulsa added two runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead before exploding for six runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 11-0 advantage.

The Cardinal continued to battle but could not generate the rally needed to close the gap.

Stanford begins preparation for finals week and will have next weekend off before playing host to Dartmouth on March 22 at 2 p.m. The Cardinal then hits the road to begin Pac-12 play at Oregon March 24-26.
