Permanent closure Evelyn Light Rail Station
Mountain View Light Rail Double Track Project
Construction Update (March 16, 2015)
Location:
Evelyn Light Rail Station
What:
Permanent closure. Crews will be removing fixtures and others items for re-use before the station
demolition begins.
When:
5:00 a.m., Monday, March 16, 2015
Why:
The Evelyn Light Rail Station will be demolished in advance of a second light rail track being built between the Mountain View and Whisman stations.
Traffic/Community Impacts:
Evelyn riders are being redirected to either the Mountain View or Whisman stations.
Vehicle and bike lane closures on westbound Evelyn Avenue will be in place at times. Cyclists and
motorists are reminded to share the road.
Location:
The VTA rail corridor, between the Mountain View Station and the SR 85 overcrossing.
What:
Both day and night crews are on site during the week, with weekend work also scheduled.
Work currently underway includes:
- --Signal and civil work that involves using trenching and grading equipment.
- Overhead electrical system work that involves drilling foundations, placing new poles and pouring concrete, and then installing the overhead wiring. This work involves the use of drilling rigs, concrete trucks, large equipment used to maneuver the poles into place and elevated bucket trucks.
- Track work that involves grading and other earthwork, and compacting rock ballast where new track will be placed. In addition, crews are currently preparing to install large crossovers between the existing track. This work includes use of excavators, truck sized compactors and large trucks to deliver ballast.
When:
This update covers the period until Friday, March 27, 2015.
Why:
As much work as possible is completed during daytime hours to minimize impacts to nearby residents
but some work must be done at night for safety reasons after the overhead electrical system has been
temporarily de-energized.
Traffic/Community Impacts:
Lane closures on eastbound Central Expressway are likely most weekdays and evenings. Daytime lane
closures are typically 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nighttime lane closures are typically 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
While the contractor is permitted to work at night, VTA requires the contractor to keep nighttime noise
impacts below a specific noise threshold.
Mountain View Double Track Project
The Mountain View Double Track project, one of a series of projects known as the VTA Light Rail Train Efficiency Program, includes installing a second set of light rail tracks between the Mountain View and Whisman stations. The work will require the closure of the underutilized Evelyn Light Rail Station. The purpose of this project is to eliminate the current bottle neck caused by the single track operation in this area of Mountain View and provide storage space to stage multiple vehicles to service future BART service and special events at Levi’s Stadium.
