Eight Days of Mountain View Bus Bridging Begins Sunday

Mountain View Light Rail Double Track Project
Construction Update

Friday, July 10, 2015

Overview:
VTA light rail service into Mountain View will be replaced by substitute bus service for an eight day period beginning Sunday, July 12 due to construction activities. Full service will be restored Monday, July 20. The extended shutdown allows crews to work full shifts throughout the day, rather than only during a short window late at night after trains have stopped running.

Information on service impacts are provided in a separate service notice. Please allow extra time for your trip during this time.

What:
Activities during this eight day shutdown will include building foundations for new overhead electrical system poles, trackbed and drainage installation work, traffic signal foundations and electrical infrastructure work.

Previously announced partial closures of Central Expressway have been scaled back and this weekend crews will be closing lanes on Central Expressway but traffic will not be shifted to the opposite side of the expressway.

Trucks delivering materials to the section of track between Whisman Station and Central Expressway are using Whisman Station Drive to access the site and Central Expressway to exit. Flaggers are to be deployed while the trucks are turning from Whisman Station Drive into the trackway area.

When:
Crews at the Central Expressway site will begin work early Sunday, July 12 and there will be multiple crews working throughout the site during daytime hours for the week and some weeknight is also scheduled. For the weekend of July 18th and 19th, crews will be again working continuously in the Whisman Station to Central Expressway area.

Mountain View Double Track Project
The Mountain View Double Track project, one of a series of projects known as the VTA Light Rail Train Efficiency Program, includes installing a second set of light rail tracks between the Mountain View and Whisman stations. The work will require the closure of the underutilized Evelyn Light Rail Station. The purpose of this project is to eliminate the current bottle neck caused by the single track operation in this area of Mountain View and provide storage space to stage multiple vehicles to service future BART service and special events at Levi’s Stadium.
