Sick Time

As of July 1, 2015, sick time law in California has changed due to the Health Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 (AB 1522). View the Sick Time Fact Sheet and Notification for an overview.

Below are details about paid sick time provided under AB 1522 by employee group:

Faculty & Academic Staff (Teaching)

Effective July 1, 2015,faculty and academic staff (teaching) will receive a lump sum of 24 hours of paid sick time each calendar year that they may use pursuant to the Paid Sick Leave Law. In addition, as is the current policy, short absences for personal business, illness, jury duty, military duty, and similarly limited absences normally are with full salary.

Individuals Appointed To Other Teaching Titles

Effective July 1, 2015, individuals appointed to other teaching titles will receive a lump sum of 24 hours of paid sick time each calendar year that they may use pursuant to the Paid Sick Leave Law.

Coaches Effective July 1, 2015, coaches will receive a lump sum of 24 hours of paid sick time each calendar year that they may use pursuant to the Paid Sick Leave Law. In addition, as is the current policy, short absences for personal business, illness, jury duty, military duty, and similarly limited absences normally are with full salary.

Graduate Students with Assistantships

Effective July 1, 2015, graduate students with assistantship appointments will receive a lump sum of 24 hours of paid sick time each calendar year that they may use pursuant to the Paid Sick Leave Law.

Student Hourly Employees Effective July 1, 2015, student hourly employees will start accruing 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. Accrual of paid sick time is limited at 48 hours or 6 days, and Student Hourly Employees may not use more than 24 hours of paid sick time (or 3 scheduled workdays, whichever is greater) per year of employment. Student hourly employees will be expected to enter their sick time use into Axess.

Regular Staff Employees The paid sick time policy for regular staff employees stated in Administrative Guide Memo 2.1.7 largely remains the same. The main changes state that a regular staff employee is covered by the protections of the Paid Sick Time Law and that a regular staff employee may use paid sick time for certain specified purposes if the employee is a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Employees Unless notified otherwise, SLAC employees are covered by applicable Stanford's policies. More information for SLAC regular staff (non-exempt, non-bargaining unit), casual & temporary staff employees, and student hourly employees is in the Fact Sheet.
Casual & Temporary Staff Employees (“Contingent Staff Employees”) Effective July 1, 2015, contingent staff Employees will start accruing 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. Accrual of paid sick time is limited at 48 hours or 6 days, and Contingent Staff Employees may not use more than 24 hours of paid sick time (or 3 scheduled workdays, whichever is greater) per year of employment. Contingent staff employees will be expected to enter their sick time use into Axess directly or through department time & leave administrators.
