Endowed Professorships

Donors of endowed professorships support the school in perpetuity by guaranteeing critical support to the school’s best faculty. The Graduate School of Education has yet to reach the level of faculty endowment enjoyed by other schools at Stanford. Currently, there are eighteen endowed chairs. The future of both teaching and research at the School depends on such investments.

Professorship funds support the faculty member's salary and research-related expenses. Each endowed faculty appointment bears the name of the donor or other honoree. Donors receive regular communications from the appointed faculty members as well as detailed financial reports about the financial performance of their funds.

The following funds may be established:

Professorships (minimum gift of $4,000,000)

When a faculty member's teaching and scholarship stand out even from the ranks of Stanford's senior professoriate, the university recognizes and secures the value of this work by appointment to an endowed chair. An endowed professorship is the highest honor and the most direct form of support the university can offer. Chairholders represent the most distinguished scholars in education today. The donors stand among the School's most generous and farsighted partners.

Lecturers (minimum gift of $2,000,000)

In addition to the tenure-line faculty, highly skilled specialists serve students in certain areas of the curriculum. Lecturers offer seminars which support the research work students conduct with regular faculty. The Graduate School of Education recruits outstanding lecturers with specialized pedagogical backgrounds, and appoints the most distinguished of these to endowed lectureships. Appointment is typically for a renewable term of two to five years.
